Panicking about 3rd hand smoke

Just looking for some advice

I am 11 days post partum and hugely struggling with my anxiety - currently awaiting a drs appointment and have referral to peri-natal mental health

At present my big worry is SIDS. I’ve been through all the possible worries and even invested in an owlet sock but tonight i’ve had a big oh shit moment around 3rd hand smoke.

We bought a clothing unit for our daughter 2nd hand off market place. When we arrived to get it, the ladies neighbour was outside smoking so we could smell a hint of smoke. My partner said when he went in to get it, he could still smell cigarettes slightly but when we got home with the unit, we put it in the garage for 2 days to air and we also got both my parents to smell it and neither could smell smoke on it. We came to the conclusion, it was simply just the smell of the neighbour out the front smoking as it was during the heat wave and the lady we picked up from had her windows open. Either way, my partner cleaned the whole thing with milton and we left it in our spare room for over a month where the window was open. I then cleaned it again and before putting her clothes in and put all the clothes in plastic and fabric dividers.

I can’t say I really thought about the possible smoke after and never noticed any kind of smell - i did have some light brown dust or dirt come off it when I cleaned it but I have no idea what tabacco residue looks like to really compare.

However tonight I’ve suddenly seen some articles about third hand smoke and am panicking that the clothes my daughter has been wearing, are stored in this cabinet and she sometimes puts her hands with sleeves covering in her mouth. To add to this, most her clothes were bought on vinted - I have washed them but again, I am now worried about this and the fact nearly every piece of furniture in our house is second hand so could possibly have picked up residue that google seems to say is impossible to remove? The only things we have that are new, are her next to me, car seat, carrier etc but our sofa etc is all second hand and the house is rented.

I know I am probably just spiralling and I remember googling at the time and it seemed the risks of a possible smokey cabinet that had been cleaned and aired was low, but now I’m so worried - the cabinet itself is the classic nursery, wooden with some kind of plastic covering and has been cleaned twice with no damage minus a few stickers the previous children stuck on that we can’t get off.

You're spiralling. She's fine. Everything is fine.

She’ll be fine.

Stop googling things and maybe just stay off the internet.

This sounds really extreme I doubt there would be any issues with a solid unit. They don’t hold smells like clothing and bedding etc….
if it’s making you anxious get rid of the unit and buy another one.

You are spiralling. She's totally fine.

I have to say, the whole SIDS thing is so, so vastly over fucking advertised. It puts the fear of god into women to a point that it is genuinely damaging at a time when you are bound to be anxious and worrying about everything anyway. I remember being so incredibly panicked about my baby dieing for no reason. Years later, when you read the stats with a clear non-post-partum head, the risk is so vastly overstated. I literally felt like every other baby dies in their sleep. They don't.

I’m a psychotherapist.
shes fine.
she will be fine.
stop googling things and seeking reassurance from others.
engage with perinatal mental health x
