Situation at school what you would do

A note that this is all information from my son and not directly from the school

When I collected my son on Friday he told me about an incident at school that day, My little boy is in year 4 (8 years old).

He was in the playground at lunch when a girl starting spitting water at him and his friends.

He and his friends ran away.

the girl was found a little later in the toilets by a member of staff crying and accused my son of hitting her. My son and his friends along with the little girl were called into the school and asked to explain what happened and upon questioning the girl confirmed she had lied and my son had’t hit her and she was spitting water at him and his friends. My son said the girl was kept in the seclusion area. He and his friends were allowed to go back to class.

After talking to to my son about the incident some more he shared that not only had the girl lied to staff initially about my son hitting her she also told a large number of year 6 kids that he had hit her and they confronted him about this incident the playground. He did not tell the teachers this part.

after I got to the bottom of this I tried to ring the school but it had already closed.

I plan to go in on Monday and talk to the school as I’m concerned that a large number of year 6 students still think my son hit this girl.

my main concern is obviously his safety but also concerned that the school did not tell me about this incident (the bits they were aware of)

How would you handle this, I know the school were not aware of the girl telling the year 6’s my son had hit her so cannot expect them to have acted at the time but what should I expect them to do on hearing this information.

I have had a conversation with my son about the fact he should have shared this part of the story with the teacher when they were asking what had happened. He has never been in trouble at school so I think he was just so shocked to be called in and accused of something he hasn’t done he was focused on that piece.

any advise would be appreciated. I’m trying to keep level headed and not over react whilst also being concerned a large group of year 6 children still believe my son hit this girl.

thank you for reading

I don’t think the school needed to contact you about what happened on Friday - the focus would have been on the YP who was spitting.

definitely contact school on Monday to share your sons worries and that the students think he’s hit. Like you say this is the critical part of the incident that school don’t know.

The school dealt with it. I wouldn't do more but ask my child to speak up for himself next time something happens.

The year 6s have definitely forgotten anything past the weekend

Wait and see what happens on Monday first

I would write an email asking if they can keep an eye on him at break time and explaining about the Y6s. No need to make a big deal of it though, it may well have all blown over by Monday.

It's tricky as, like you say, you don't actually know what happened. I think it's reasonable to go in and ask if they can tell you about it. If they aren't fully sure of the details your son is saying it may be that they want to talk to everyone involved to make sure they have all sides clear. They may well ask some of those bot involved what they saw too.

I wouldn't expect them to have phoned or told you about this as it doesn't seem too concerning, as long as they have dealt with it in line with their behaviour policy. I can understand why you want to let them know your worries though and why you might like them to keep an eye out for him to ensure there is nothing further

I would just tell school what your son has said and mention your concern and see what they say. I think if anything at the most the school would probably have a chat with those year 6s and let them know it's been confirmed there's been no hitting by your child and then that is that.

Thank you for your thoughts and taking the time to post.

I have no complaints about the way the school handled it based on the info they had and I’m glad they questioned to get to the bottom of it.

I will just mention about the year 6 info when I drop him off and ask them to keep an eye at lunch but hopefully they would have forgotten all about it.

I prob have been overthinking it as it’s been the weekend so I haven’t been able to mention the year 6 thing and resolve it. 🙄
