How can I be happy?

I don’t know how to put it any other way, but I think I hate my life. I’m an older single Mum, my child’s father has not been involved since I told him I was pregnant. I work full time in a demanding job. Despite having some family living nearby (my own Mum actually lives with me) I don’t have anytime for myself unless it’s after my child has gone to bed, then I’m often too tired for most things.
And I think I’m just miserable. It’s like I’m always at the end of my patience, like I can physically feel it in my chest, I’m almost swallowing my anger / annoyance. I constantly read online about how a mother’s mental health is the key factor in a child’s happiness, and I’m so scared I am ruining her childhood. Like, I know I’m just performing every single day, but I don’t enjoy any of it. I wish I could be happy. And my child is so lovely, she deserves so much better.
You know when you see those things where it says ‘your child knows if you’re faking it’ or ‘a child doesn’t say they’ve had a bad day they ask you to play’ or ‘if you say no when your child asks you to play it tells them they’re not important’, but how am I mean to do everything? I wish I could just sit and play whenever she asks, but the house is so messy and I just can’t stay on top of it. I blitzed everything over the summer and now it’s just as bad.
She’s started school, so is now doing phonics, we don’t do them everyday, I just genuinely don’t know how to fit it in. I want her to have every chance in life, enrich her life, but how? Where’s the time, the money?
I know I’m rambling and I’m not entirely sure what the point of this post is. Maybe I want someone to tell me how I can be happy, not just putting it on, so that I can give my daughter what she deserves.

Oh op, you sound like a good mum whose on the edge of burnout. I was in something similar a few years back and after I got help, my life got so much better. Honestly would recommend reaching out to a counsellor/life coach.
No one can do everything, parenting is pretty much winging it most of the time and no one is perfect. You doing the best you can is enough.

I don’t usually comment on here, but your situation is very close to mine…. I have been so close to feeling how you feel, but I haven’t got to as low/frustrated/angry as you have… but I have had to talk myself out of it on many occasions.

I work 4 days over 5 though, so not full time, and I think that makes a huge difference. Is that an option for you?

Also, I have lowered my own expectations for tidiness around the house. Does it do my head in? Yes. But I am not so stressed out because I allow myself to have downtime.

Also, I used to feel annoyed and angry that I couldn’t go out, haven’t got the same social life as I had (or indeed the lifestyle DC’s father has while he’s not around). But I took a step back and had a deep dive into my own brain about WHY I felt I should be going out more… and I realised that it was because I felt that I should, because I used to be fro kids, and because my ex could go out whenever he wanted. But, when I REALLY thought about it, I realised that I felt that should be going out, not that I wanted to go out - I’m quite happy to stay at home (like you, I’m tired in the evening and happy to go to bed when my DC do). So changing my mindset about that has really helped.

I’ve been a single parent for about 5 years, and it’s only in last year or so I’ve felt like this, so it does take time.

I hope some of this resonates xx

Also, I’ve had two periods where I have felt angry and that was taking it out on DC which made me sad. The first time, I stopped drinking alcohol - that levelled my mood. And then more recently, (I don’t know how old you are) HRT has helped too! x

It’s a big transition for both of you when child starts school. Don’t under estimate that.
it will get better. Just needs time.
do phonics on weekends
Significantly drop standards at home. I’d bet your dd doesn’t care. As long as it’s clean - tidiness isn’t that important.

Being a parent is hard. Be kinder to yourself. Sounds like you are doing a good job

You can’t do it all. If your mum lives with you can you lean on her for more support?
