Moving set dilemma

My son was moved from the second set to the top set (6 sets in total) this was after a month at school. He was really happy at his new school, had made a great group of friends, and loved his teachers. Then they did assessments and he was the only one moved to the top set. He was immediately devastated by this, missed his budding friendships and his teachers, and the lessons. Struggled with a couple of subjects also, being that he’d missed a month of the teaching! Also there was a kid in tbe class he found disruptive, the class just didn’t seem as nice. He begged me to ask for him to be moved back down. Because I had seen how well he had settled into school, and made great friends I asked for him to be moved. Did I make the right choice?

be honest- what would you have done?

I think that his motivation is way more important at this stage than which set he is in. Yes I would have asked.

Zero harm in asking, plus it makes him feel like he’s understood by you.

I had my son moved back down a set when he was little for that exact reason. He’s gone on to get straight 9s/A*s and a place on a competitive Oxbridge degree. It didn’t hold him back at all.
