Four year old preference for daddy hurting my feelings

The title says it all and yes I feel pathetic!

i have two children - four year old and eight month girls. My four year old for the last week or so has shown a huge preference to daddy - wants him when she’s crying, tells me
hiw much she loves him, keeps drawing pictures of him and makes cards for him. Obviously this is all lovely and I am glad she has such a gorgeous dad as I did not. However I do feel a bit slighted as I do a lot of the grunt work eg pick ups, drop offs and more hours with her (he gets back from work late) and I am taking it a bit personally.

I absolutely know I shouldn’t but it is hard when she greets daddy with a huge hug and me with indifference!

has this ever happened to you? Did you feel similar? And did it eventually end?!

Sadly dc take us(and our complete adoration!)dms for granted at times..your dd is seeking conformation df still loves her. Especially with a new baby in the scene....enjoy the break imo !
Don't take it to heart...

This has happened to me and I don’t have a great current ending to it!!

j have a 6yo 3yo and 1yo.

middle child was 20 months when baby was born. Before baby arrived my middle child (was the youngest!) bed shared with me. Was breastfed to a year. I had done every bath time, getting dressed, feeding in highchair. When newborn arrived I asked husband to do nappy changes for 2 yo. To do their bedtime. Within a month they preferred daddy and they have never really come back to me.
they like me, will spend time with me, but never ever ever choose me over daddy for bedtime if daddy is in the house. Will go to daddy for a cut on the knee not me unless I’m alone parenting. It’s heart breaking. I don’t think they will ever choose me again despite me doing all 2 years care alone, they can’t remember that. It is painful, I feel your pain

It’s only been a week! Does the baby need you more at the moment so older DD is trying to pull her dad closer? Beyond that they’re confusing little mites and there’s often no rhyme nor reason to it.

My eldest has been like that since the day she was born. She's an adult now but still lights up when she talks about him. Even though she is completely aware of his foibles he's an unearned golden halo.

One of my sisters was the same about my dad until the day he died. Insecure attachment in both their cases.

If he's a good man then all will be well.

NorthFacingGardener · 08/10/2026 20:46

She’ll come back to you soon… my oldest had a phase like this when youngest was little…. Now they both harass me constantly and won’t let DH do anything to help with them 🙄

Sorry I’m projecting a bit there… it is a bit of a shock when it first happens but it’s nice when you get to be the favourite again!

Branleuse · 08/10/2026 20:48

In my experience, this sort of thing comes and goes. Sometimes you'll be the favourite. Sometimes it will be dad. Sometimes it will be grandma etc

It can be hurtful of course, but by child 3, I was making the most of it and insisting whoever was current flavour of the month, did extra childcare

seahorsessky · 08/10/2026 20:49

It's very common (traditionally the other way round, because a lot of men never did childcare), so please don't worry at all, they grow out of it.

johnd2 · 08/10/2026 23:03

Ha ha just take it as nature's way of giving you a week off being hassled constantly!
I've never been favourite with either of ours, first question every day at pick up is "where's mummy, I want mummy"
It's not related to what I do as I do/did most things with the oldest and vice versa with the youngest, they just like to compete and test the boundaries

lxn889121 · 09/10/2026 02:38

if it was the other way around, do you think your husband would care?

Its part of how we are raised.. we except that all mums will be loved and favored, and dads will be second. So as a result dad's don't expect it. They expect mum to be favorite, and when the kid runs to mummy every time they don't feel hurt or upset by it.

But mums have the opposite experience, they fully expect to be preferred, so when dad receives more love, they feel rejected and hurt. Every week there are posts like this on here, with the same experience.

You just have to remind yourself though that it doesn't matter. Yes in the old days, women were the no.1 parent at all times, and generally became the most loved by their children. But now, we want and expect dads to step up and do 50% of the parenting, and as a result, "good" dads have a pretty equal chance of becoming the closer parent to the children (It is frustrating when it happens to "bad" dads).

Isn't that a good thing though? We want dads to do their fair share, and parent equally.. so we have to accept that dads have an equal chance of being the closer parents. Nothing personal to the mums, it doesn't mean their children don't love them, just like for generations of dads that came before it, it is just an inevitable part of the balancing of parenting responsibilities.

Personally I would just be thankful you have a husband who seems like they are doing well enough as a dad to become the favorite. So many kids grow up with useless dads - your kids are some of the lucky ones .

TruffleSlinky · 09/10/2026 02:53

Yes this happened to me. When my DD was the same age as your DD, she had to go to hospital to have her tonsils out and she chose DH to go with her instead of me Sad

It went on for quite a few years, but now she's a teenager and we get on really well and have a lovely close relationship. Don't despair OP.

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 09/10/2026 08:25

Thank you everyone. It is a good thing ultimately but it’s hard to go through. I’m glad im
not alone. Mums are fab.
