Fruity smelling five year old

DS has been smelling fruity for the last few days. Not really his breath but more his head and the rest of his body. It doesn't fully go away with a shower either. He doesn't have any other symptoms but I'm wondering if I should get it checked if it doesn't get better in a few days. Does anyone have any experience with type 1 diabetes? Could the fruity smell be the first symptom before other symptoms start?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Op i am not an hcp but I would be booking an emergency Gp appointment. If at any time between now and then he’s difficult to wake/drowsy then go to A&E.

It can be. With my child it was the thirst that made me seek medical help, our GP could snell the pear drops like smell but I couldn't.
They say look out for the 4 Ts, toilet, thirsty, thin, tired. I would think you'd notice those before the smell as that's caused by high ketones which happens when things get very very serious.
Trust your gut, you can't muck about with your child's health, better to be safe than sorry.

Any other symptoms OP? Get them to the GP tomorrow, could be ketones and type 1 but could also be a virus sickness etc that giving off a smell. But I wouldn’t be waiting around.

No he doesn't have any of those symptoms and I haven't noticed anything else either.

It is a pear drop type smell? It can be a sign of ketosis. One of the causes is diabetes, but it can be caused by change in diet or other things. I had it when I had dry socket and struggled to eat.
Agree with pp, warrants an urgent GP review and straight to hospital if he suddenly deteriorates.

It's not as strong today as it was yesterday but it's a strange smell. It is quite a nice smell actually. Or rather it would be if I wasn't so freaked out. He smells like honey and vanilla. I think I'll try to get a GP appt tomorrow but the reason why I'm a bit hesitant is because I'm not sure if it couldn't be his shower gel or shampoo. I tried to sniff them and they smell fruity but not like ds.

What does pear drop smell like? It smells like honey and vanilla. What is dry socket? He has been eating quite well actually with no.major change in his diet.

Not ignoring the diabetes risk but you might be smelling an illness, I can smell when my kids are going to get sick it's really weird.and does smell like a bit like you describe. Partner can't smell it at all but I'm always right...

KnickerlessParsons · 05/10/2026 23:33

Is he eating a lot of fruity sweets or something - sweets you don’t know about.

What kind of illness? Do you mean a cold? He did have a cold last week but seems to be completely fine now.

Any illness. Vomiting, a cold etc.

Pear drops are a boiled.sweet, still get them, but a popular sweet in the 80s/90s. Its a very distinct smell like cannabis or camomile lotion. But if youve never had them you wont recognise it, its a sweet smell though. Id get it checked by GP anyways, its a change that you have noticed.

Not today or this weekend but last week he did have quite a few sweets I think. I don't remember exactly when it was. Haribo and fruitElla and similar.
