Missing Year 1 parents evening due to work and training

Have you ever missed year one parents evening?

I feel so bad but I am working till very late. I normally could have swapped the shift with another colleague but unfortunately I need to go to a training ( that does not have any more slots at the moment and even for this i had booked months in advance).

i don’t know if I should just give the training a miss and swap my shift?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Who will be looking after your child? Could they go and take your kid? Otherwise there is every likelihood the teacher will meet you another time.

Is your child's father going? I wouldn't worry if so. If they aren't going either then just try to arrange to see the teacher another time.

i Asked the person looking after but she said she can’t

If I've not been able to make.a parents evening because of work the teacher has always been happy to meet with me another time, either face to face after school or via a telephone call.

Bitzee · 28/09/2026 18:33

It happens. I’d just email the school and ask politely if you can have a quick phone another time.

Thank you so much, maybe I can suggest this. I already asked the school office whether there is an alternative but they haven’t got back. Downside would be I won’t get to see his work he did in school, but some feedback would be appreciated

The schools are usually happy to help. It's in their interest too that they have parents involved on their child's education. How you get it sorted

It’s a shame but it can’t be helped. At least he isn’t in an exam year. I’m sure you will be able to talk to the teacher another time. Just make sure it’s on their terms to not create extra work.

Icecreamandcoffee · 28/09/2026 18:40

Id speak to the teacher directly. Explain you are on work training and can you meet or have a phone call another time. When I was teaching I was more than happy to meet or call parents who were unable to attend for similar reasons. It would more than likely be either during the school day or just after school though. I couldn't do a meet or phone call at say 7pm.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 28/09/2026 18:48

I’m sure they can do it over the phone or in a separate meeting. In the first parents’ evening in year 1 I’m pretty sure the teacher knew absolutely nothing about my DD. It felt pretty pointless to be honest. The second one at the end of the year was much more helpful.
I wouldn’t worry about missing this one.

BendingSpoons · 28/09/2026 18:50

The teacher might be willing to meet you another day after school, if you are able to schedule that around work. Then you could see his work too.

mindutopia · 29/09/2026 13:14

Just do it another day. Usually it’s me who goes, but really there is no need for two parents to be there. If you’re a single parent, schedule a meeting for a different day. It’s no big deal. And no, I’ve not gone to every single one.

Dirtymirrors · 29/09/2026 14:08

As a teacher I was always very happy to organise an evening when parents could pop in at pick up, look at the child's work and talk through. Honestly not an issue for work clashes.

Still did but was less thrilled when it was parents who had booked slots and then just couldn't be bothered turning up.
