How do I make mom friends?

I feel pretty isolated. I would like people to talk to me

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

How old are your children?

When my oldest was a baby I had an NCT group but that fizzled when I went to work. I then met a bunch of mums at baby groups and I’m still friends with a couple 12 years later. I am friendly with some school mums and mums from activities. I find when kids get a bit older and sporting activities get a bit more serious it’s easier to make friends as you spend a lot of time together.

She's 3. I kind of lost all my friends after I gave birth

Hello lovely.

I have met some amazing friends in the app peanut particularly when she was young.

I also met my best friend on a Facebook page (city) lonely girls group ... See if there is similar near you? Even if it's just a WhatsApp group you end up joining it's a bit of company.

Motherhood and particularly new motherhood is frigging lonely.

tiredtiredd · 27/09/2026 21:15

Are there any local baby groups near you? Thats the best way

goodnightssleepbenice · 27/09/2026 21:17

Does she go to nursery ? If so start a conversation with one of the mums at pick up maybe ? X

Do you go to toddler groups? Twenty years on some of my best friends are people I met at toddler groups and other pre-school activities.

Fizbosshoes · 27/09/2026 21:21

I think it often hinges on mums/parents doing drop offs at the same activity or staying at said activity whether thats a toddler group, or school, craft activity, soft play etc.
MN is sometimes a bit funny (imo).about mums at baby groups, school etc but in reality youre all in the same situation and often they are people you will meet a lot so it kind of makes sense to be friendly.
I made friends when my DD was in nursery and we're still friends now theyre at uni! (Even if some of the girls arent still friends)

@goodnightssleepbenice sadly, she is just turning 3, so she is too young

See what’s on at the local library and ask them what groups are on , do you live near a nice park ?

newmommy2006yay · 27/09/2026 21:24

Too young for what? Nurseries usually accept from a few months old and at almost 3 she is old enough for preschools as well

Have you tried going to local groups/classes like church/community centre toddler groups, rhyme time etc?

newmommy2006yay · 27/09/2026 21:38

She doesn't really like kids her age; she has autism, so that limits what we can do @yonem

If you want mum friends you are going to have to spend time with other children! She is going to have to be with kids her age when she starts school and it’s good to start getting her used to that otherwise school is going to be a difficult transition.

Are there local SEN/autism groups?

mindutopia · 27/09/2026 21:58

It’s quite difficult at that age. They don’t really have proper friends and therefore aren’t meeting other children with parents who are like you. It wasn’t really til my eldest was Y3/4 in school and we really got to know other parents that we had close parent friends.

I will say though that 90% of my friends are not mum friends. They’re friends from school and work and neighbours and hobbies. I don’t have loads in common with the other mums at school. They are nice enough, but not people I’d be friends with. If you’re lonely, you’re much better off working to build friendships with people you have something in common with. If you don’t know those people, then it’s time to start finding ways to meet them: do you work? Volunteer? Do activities you enjoy? Have friends from school you could reconnect with? Cousins or siblings?

@mindutopia i lost everything for my kid; my family hates me because I went through the birth. My bf works a lot, and my friends blocked me

There’s a lot to unpack there. Do you have autism yourself?

What about groups aimed at adults? I’m guessing you’re based in the midlands because you say mom. From googling it looks like the family hubs in Birmingham have support groups for parents of autistic kids from birth onwards, something like that at your local children’s centre maybe?

newmommy2006yay · 27/09/2026 22:18

@yonem i prop have autism and i will look into it thanks for your help!!!
