My 8 year old daughter is struggling in school with her maths and written work. Her class teachers one whos head on special needs doesn't think its adhd or autism but have mentioned it could be a processing issue so are currently looking in to testing her. Does anyone have experience with this? At the moment she seems anxious and is stimming alot. Any help would be appreciated on how to help with this. Thank you.

Sounds perfect child who would benefit from a bit of private 1-2-1 tuition

can you afford this?

We found having a comprehensive test for dyslexia (paid privately to avoid long waits) provided a really full report and covered everything about processing. We were assured that they would differentiate between different processing issues, included dyscalculia and were very clear that if they thought it was something else rather than the things they were assessing for, they would highlight that to us.
It was so useful as it pinpointed where the issues were and also where they weren’t. Our child’s school related anxiety reduced significantly as a result, because they were getting the targeted help they needed as a result. Good luck!

Thank you I will look in to this as im not sure what the wait time is as being done via the school.

In my opinion, state schools prefer to brush this under the carpet so they can blame it on the child, rather than their lack of SEN accountability/funding/knowledge…

First step if you don’t know what the issue is would be to get an Educational Psychologist to assess the child.

@Sd3000 A big hug to you from a mum of three DCs with three different processing issues. They are all adults now, but those school years were brutal trying to find help for them. Back in the ‘ ‘80’s and ‘90’s when they were in school there wasn’t much help available for their learning styles, so it’s encouraging to read that her teacher has suggested testing. It sounds as if her school is on top of kids with learning differences… it used to be called learning disabilities, but it’s not a disability, it is the education systems lack of using different ways of teaching for children who ‘think outside the box’! These are the amazing people who have inventive ideas and develop strategies to do things differently than the general population. Celebrate her differences with her and tell her how amazing she is. Maths and written work can be learned eventually by most anyone but the talents and natural abilities she has that make her a unique individual, can’t… think Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, Charles Schwab, etc Flowers

That sounds really difficult for both of you, especially with the anxiety on top of the school struggles. Hopefully the assessment gives you clearer answers, and in the meantime gentle reassurance, breaks, and working closely with her teachers may help her feel more supported.
