My daughter wants to convert to islam, how do we go about this?

Okay so, my daughter is 15 and has recently been talking about converting to Islam after her boyfriend (Who is Muslim) taught her some things about it. She's already started wearing different clothes and bought a headscarf and goes to pray with him pretty much daily. I really don't have a problem with it, if it's what she wants and it makes her happy I really don't think it's an issue, but I am concerned about some things. Firstly, just how much this will affect her social life, there has been a lot of discrimination in our area and I'm worried about her experiencing it. Second off, I'm just unsure of everything as I'm not very educated on these things. She's been adopting some cultural things from her boyfriend too and I think it's amazing and all but I just don't want her to to start pushing things onto my other daughter. I will also need to just adapt to her new way of life if she is really serious about this, but I don't think that's necessarily a big deal.

Did anyone else go through something similar with their child? Advice would be appreciated as I need some help navigating this.

I think you should read up a bit more on Islam and the position of women in it.

More pertinently, she's 15 and far too young to make a life altering decision like this over a boy she is with at 15. Can you remember how many boys have come and gone since you were 15? When I was 15 I wanted to join a commune and live off the land.

Don’t be so daft OP you don’t support her to make a big life change for a 5 minute boyfriend at the age of 15. You say “no” and if she wants to go ahead she’ll need to do it herself but I’d be making my thoughts about her joining a religion that views women as lesser very clear.

It is fairly common for teenagers to try out different faiths and ideologies, especially linked to a new relationship or friendship.

I think as a parent it's important to be as neutral as possible and be there for the fairly likely event that the relationship ends, which may well end the interest.

Do not change anything about your own lifestyle because of this. It is her choice to a certain extent but that doesn't mean she can push it onto you or siblings.

Keep your own house rules as they are - and remind her that she still has to adhere to the family rules first.

A few of my friends had religious conversions around this age. None of them have persisted and we are all in our thirties now! Keep an open mind, be clear with your daughter that she can always chat to you if she's having doubts, but otherwise I'd just keep out of this one, chances are that it won't last.

If your daughter converts it should be because she believes not because of a relationship A women does not need convert to be marry

She’s 15. Doing what a boyfriend says regarding clothes and religion? Just NO. She’s under his influence and has she no self respect?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 26/09/2026 15:56

Was she interested in converting before she met her boyfriend? Or is she, an impressionable 15 year old, just eager to do what will help her to align herself more closely to him?

I would be asking her what it is about the religion that aligns with her own values and beliefs, what sources she has used to research the religion, etc. I would also be concerned about such a long term commitment at her age: when this relationship breaks up (as it almost certainly will), she can’t just shove a religion in the back of her wardrobe. She’s in this for the long haul, with or without him. Is she ready for that?

Honestly, she should have already considered the potential for discrimination if this is a step she is wanting to take. If she hasn’t, she’s too naive to be making this decision.

It's never the blokes that renounce islam, is it? Always the women who have to convert.

Viviennemary · 26/09/2026 15:58

Tell her she can't. She is under 18 so Afaik she can't.In any case I expect she will be told she needs to wait till she's an adult ie 18. And Islam teaches respect for parents.

Teacaketravesty · 26/09/2026 15:58

What are you like?! She needs you to be the adult: don’t facilitate this ‘amazing’ thing. You don’t need to be anti, just don’t give it your energy and let her find her way as she matures. Have a think about your culture and beliefs and live those clearly. She can find her own with you as example.

You think it’s ‘amazing’. Do your research, she’s 15.

PrincessofWills · 26/09/2026 16:01

Just say no, not in your house.

AgnesMcDoo · 26/09/2026 16:02

my DS is wanted to become a Christian at this age and got right into it for a few years, stopped eating meat on a Friday and things like that and and then lost interest in it

Just let her be.

If she wants to pursue it let her do it.

it’s not unusual at this age.

PleaseDontTreadOnTheDaisies · 26/09/2026 16:04

My DD went through a phase at about 13 of being devout Christian (USA/Evangelical-style), influenced not by a bf, but by TikTok. She was obsessed with DH and I being non-believers and honestly believed we would go to hell. We just nodded and smiled, and didn't really engage, and she got over it pretty quickly. She laughs about it now.

I'd be much, much more concerned about a conversion influenced by a boyfriend at 15! Do you know this boy well? Is he a boy, or is her older than her?? I wouldn't support this in any way - she's young, easy influenced and possibly vulnerable.

ThatLoudCat · 26/09/2026 16:05

I would not be encouraging this. I wouldn't ban it or stop her seeing him for fear of driving her towards him, but I would be very uninterested and "that's nice, dear" about it. Hopefully, the novelty will wear off.

sconebone · 26/09/2026 16:05

I presume you are going along with this as you don't want to be seen as being racist or prejudiced against the religion, but she is 15 years old! Tell her she can revisit this when she is 18 if she is still with the same boy. In a very worst case scenario she could be being radicalised.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 26/09/2026 16:06

No way Jose. Nothing against anyone within the culture but no man should be telling a 15 year to convert. I would feel the same about fervent Christian’s or Jehovah witnesses. Sorry I think it is controlling and coercive behaviour which will get worse.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 26/09/2026 16:08

I’d be supporting it until Xmas, when she wakes up to find she hasn’t got any presents under the tree and changes her mind!

Seriously though if you push against it you could end up driving her closer to him, so just I think I’d approach it like most of these teenage identity things, ask lots of questions, keep dialogue open and respectful and give her the room and grace to change her mind without embarrassment down the line.

amylou8 · 26/09/2026 16:09

This is a windup surely....
You could buy her a burka for Christmas. On second thoughts she won't be doing Christmas or accepting any gifts this year, so maybe for Eid instead.

Thingcanonlygetbetter · 26/09/2026 16:09

Hell would freeze over first before I would allow my 15 year old daughter to convert to Islam for a boy!

amber763 · 26/09/2026 16:11

Do not let her do this! You absolutely should have a problem with this. Shes 15!
