Fourteen-year-old daughter says she hates spending time with us

I am just at my wits end with my 14 yo daughter (suspected ND.) I thought all was going well and we’ve just been out for coffee at her behest which I was looking forward to, but she stormed out of the cafe saying she hated spending time with us, we were always negative, it was never fun, she wants to go to her friend’s house because it’s always nice there.

I’m just nonplussed at the rudeness and drama of it, I’d never have dared to have spoken to my parents like that at her age (and they would never have taken me out for cake and coffee except for birthday.)

I had said we couldn’t leave her sister (12) behind as that wouldn’t be nice/ you can’t leave a 12 yo home alone. That may have been the root of the problem. Bought cakes and coffee, both kids upset because I said 2 cakes between 3 (cakes were the size of bricks!). Briefly spoke to 14 yo about incomplete homework., then it seemed to be a nice conversation until she got upset.

I just feel so sad that it seems impossible to do what I took completely for granted with my own family, which is spend enjoyable time together having a civil conversation and taking it in turns to speak. It is so hard.

Normally I am really good at not taking anything personally, being very balanced & cheerful but today has just really knocked me sideways. I feel so sad that I seem to get it so wrong. I have a great relationship with my own parents and sister so I find it really hard that I’m failing totally here.

You're definitely not failing. You sound like a fantastic mother. I went through a terrible stage when I was around that age. A stage I still regret massively. You will both get through this. I am very close to my mother now whereas at this age, I kept pushing her away. It must be terribly stressful, however. Definitely recommend trying to seek out support/assessment regarding the suspected autism.

Briefly spoke to 14 yo about incomplete homework - maybe a tactical error on a relaxing jaunt!

14 year old's perspective: "Blimey - can't even go out for a coffee with my family without getting nagged about homework - don't know why I bother!"

I agree with 14 year olds not wanting to hang out with parents. At that age they have their own friendship group and don't want their younger sister foisted on them either, Not leaving a 12 year old on their own for a couple of hours is hele-coptering in the extreme unless they have special needs and cannot be left alone.

You got 3 things wrong:

  1. you shouldn't have taken the sister
  2. have a cake each
  3. never talk about unfinished homework. This should be in the home environment.

That said, teenagers are difficult to understand. They don't even understand themselves, so we have no chance!

Yes good advice.
