Is a 3.5 tog sleep sack too warm for my baby?

Hi,

I stay in a tenement flat with single glazing. The temperature last I checked dropped to just under 18 degrees last night and I had dressed my baby in a long sleeve baby grow, and sleep suit with a sleeveless 3.5 tog sleep sack. It was the first night our almost 6 month old slept almost 11hours. Now tonight I dressed him the same but now worried about SIDS. He wasn’t sweaty at all when I checked. Thoughts

Check out the little layers app- it's great and very reassuring.

It says 2.5 + sleepsuit + short vest-

Not hugely dissimilar to 3.5 plus long vest?

I'd go off how baby seemed.

I would say so as I follow these from Gro Company. Do you have a 2.5 tog?

Photo under review but 18-20 2.5 tog bag and long sleeved body suit.

16-18 2.5tog and sleep suit (no vest)

3.5tog is for when the temperature is under 16⁰C. You also had 2 layers under it which would make them even warmer (thats what it suggests for under 14⁰C)

2.5tog would be more appropriate and save the 3.5tog for the middle of winter

KnickerlessFlannel · 23/09/2026 20:10

3.5 plus 2 layers is waaaaay too much! 18 degrees isn't that cool either.

Meand2Ls · 23/09/2026 20:13

Way to warm and it slightly worries me that you say he slept the longest he has like that.
It’s one of the most horrific sayings out there but ‘cold babies cry, hot babies -‘ is a saying for a reason

3.5 tog is way too much at that temp. Please listen to the advice. If you are unsure read the lullaby trust website.

2.5 tog for most houses at the min. 3.5 tog is quite high

Hi OP,

If baby is restless in 2.5 and seems cold, I would try a long sleeve vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog… this used to work for my DD. I think sometimes the room feels chillier than the temp says. But always feel their back or belly to check their core temperature.

With my DD we had a gro egg thermometer & I’d pretty much obsess stick to the recommendations. But she wore a 3.5 in the thick of winter & sometimes fluffy pjs too, it would’ve been around 14-16 degrees. There was times I put her in one sleeping bag and had to change because she was too cold or hot.

Just now my 2nd (14 months) is in a 1.5, short sleeve vest and long sleeve pyjamas. Our house temp currently ranges from 19.5 - 22.

We only broke out the 3.5 tog on nights when the outside temperature was due to drop below freezing. At 18c ish in the bedroom my kids would still likely be in their summer weight sleeping bag.

Yes too warm for now- I only used 3.5 tog in the middle of winter. Go for 2.5 and sleepsuit with no vest.

I don't get all the hysteria, sorry. He slept well and clearly wasn't sweaty or panting, overheating. It does get cold in the small hours so perhaps he needs to be warmer. You need to go by how baby feels especially when older, if they're not clammy and stressed and sleeping well then they're fine.

6mo is the latter end of period in which most sids deaths occur too. Obvs not 0 but as long as still safe sleeping then the risk is low
Try it again tonight and see how he goes?
