ds wants big boy pants instead of nappies but doesnt always want to use potty

ds is 19 months so fairly young for potty training i know. He's been avoiding nappies as much as he can eg running away curling into really awkward positions to put them on.

He will bring pants to me and will happily let me put them on him. So i thought he was trying to tell me he was ready. We've had successes before actively starting to potty train. But now he will sit on the potty for quite a while but doesnt do anything then as soon as he moves away from it he does.

Im just not sure what to do. TIA

I had this - no helpful advice.. I just spent a lot of my time mopping up puddles

shelleylou · 30/06/2008 10:43

i surpose i lucky with that flame ds will try to mop them up lol.

I might try that winky and then just keep sitting him on the potty.

I really dont have much of a clue lol

Have you tried pull up nappies, like Huggies Walkers? He might like those unless you use towelling nappies.

i already use pull ups as its easier than trying to get normal nappies on him.

Ive just put pants on over his pull up and he wasnt impressed

i think it would be amazing if he were really ready - probably a good while yet.

I think if this was me I'd just stick to the pull ups - he may not like them but unless you want to spend the next possibly ten months or year clearing up after him, then I think it's worth sticking with them!

Do you have pants in the house for another child? Cos if not I'd be tempted to put them well out of his reach. I'm all for bringing children on and developing them and not holding them back - but there is plenty of time for him to develop to potty training stage, and having the pants around may just be causing you and him more problems than they're worth at the mo

have you considered cloth pull ups? you can get some with funky prints - maybe that might help keep him on side? My DD2 is the same but thankfully is happy with pull up wraps over her (cloth) nappy or her big sister's pants over her trousers

i put pants over his pull up and after his iniial humph ive got a pull up on he was fine. He looked quit pleased.
