Sensitive nine-year-old struggling to find comfortable clothes

My nine yo DD has always been quite sensitive with clothes. We’d found a long sleeve dress and leggings for winter and a short sleeve dress with shorts for summer that she was comfortable in and it was her “uniform” for years. I’d just buy a few different colours of each and we were fine.

But she’s now getting a bit more fashion conscious and feels the dresses are a bit babyish. She is also now in the biggest size they come in. I’ve taken her shopping three times, we come back with a whole new wardrobe each time and she barely wears any of it. I’ve returned loads but kept some bits that she keeps trying but ends up in tears saying it’s not comfortable.

The clothes she is picking are mainly denim trousers, shorts and skirts. We seem to have found two pairs of denim trousers she’s ok with but I’m still struggling beyond the trousers.

When we were on holiday she was in tears every time we went out as she had nothing she was comfortable in. My husband didn’t exactly help as I got her in cycling shorts and t-shirt and he said she couldn’t wear it to a nice restaurant.

We are going away in October and it will be warm so I need to find something she will wear and will still be smart enough for a nice restaurant in the evening. I’m happy for her to just wear the cycling shorts but she isn’t. Any thoughts on what we should try or brands?? I’ve mainly looked in Next and H&M so far. Thanks

What about soft cotton vest tops and cycle short style knickers under her clothing, so her base layer is soft.

Try Uniqlo.

My dd works in next (she’s 22) and she had this girl’s playsuit which is super baggy.

There is also a really soft denim jumpsuit.

That’s a good idea. It sounds like she really wants to wear what her friends are wearing.

Try Uniqlo.

I was going to say Uniqlo. Seconded. It’s not cheap, but the fabrics are soft and my 12 year old approves of the styling.
