Can anyone suggest what this rash may be on my son? It has appeared on his back and his chest. I took him to pharmacy on Friday when it was flat and not red and they prescribed a fungal cream however it has become raised today and a “cauliflower” appearance now I have a newborn so beginning to panic he also catches it.

My son had a rash like this when he was 3, started in the midline of his chest and wrapped round under his arm to the back. It was shingles. Has your son had chicken pox?

How did they treat it in your son?

The photo isn’t clear enough for my ageing eyes but it resembles molluscum. 2 of my grandchildren had it as toddlers. It’s a blistery looking rash with a rough raised feel to it. From what I recall there is no particular treatment for it and it runs its course. They weren’t unwell in any way but It took months to fade away.

However, it can be contagious in skin to skin contact, sharing towels etc. Best to have a GP take a look.

Thank you. I’ll be sure to give an update after GP trip

I’d try not to worry it’s very likely a fungal rash. Worth double checking with doctor tomorrow as you have a newborn.

Sunshine1500 · 13/09/2026 22:56

Good news is he’s no other symptoms.

pinkishtongue · 13/09/2026 22:58

Looks like molloscum to me too. My DS had it under his arms and it didn’t bother him but took months to disappear.

Edenmum2 · 13/09/2026 23:02

The way it follows in that odd pattern makes me think shingles too OP, sorry.

Greenjersey · 13/09/2026 23:10

My DD also had shingles as a toddler. As I remember it was quite painful when lifting her up, similar position on her body as your child, OP. No treatment was offered and it passed in a couple of weeks

schnubbins · 14/09/2026 12:33

That is shingles

crazymommaclub · 14/09/2026 12:55

Is it painful? If it’s in a band on one side of his body it could be shingles. Has he previously had the chicken pox vaccine?

BalakayAARon · 17/09/2026 17:09

I hope your little one is recovering well.
