Reception birthday party plans: whole class, a few new friends or old ones?

My daughter has just started Reception where she’s settling in very well but doesn’t have close friends yet (only done a few days so far and didn’t really know anyone before)
it’s her birthday at the end of October and I’m toying up what to do for her party. She’s pretty social and loves celebrations but I don’t think would mind if it were 5 friends or 30!

Do I
a) plan a class party and invite everyone and hope they’ve all settled a bit by then and enough (but not everyone!) comes.
this would mean a hall somewhere and heap and cheerful mini disco or something as budget isn’t huge

b) wait to see if there are a few people she really gels with a do a smaller / more of an experience

c) do a get together with friends from her old nursery / family friends etc

I like planning parties and making things feel special but do find it pretty stressful and also juggling work, her little sister and new routines!

any pearls of wisdom, experiences or thoughts appreciated

I’d go with option a. Whole class. Cheap and cheerful in a hall. If you have space you could also add on the old friends. It’s too soon I think to ask her to choose 5 best friends for an outing, I didn’t attempt that until Y4, and restricting the list to nursery and family friends seems IMO a missed opportunity to encourage new school friendships.

Whole class is normal, with extras like cousins, old nursery friends. But of course you can do whatever you like, just that seems to be the norm at this stage.

I'd do whole class as she's unlikely to be able to pick 5 friends at that point, plus it's a good way to encourage friendships and for you to get to know the parents (if you want to). If you can stretch to it I would hire an entertainer as it takes away a lot of the organising.

With a birthday so early in the school year, a whole class party is a great way to build bridges and help the whole class and parents bond more. I am still grateful to the mum who did this for her son's 1 September birthday when my DD started reception.

Would your daughter LOVE a whole class party? Love being the centre of attention in a big hall full of kids? If she would I'd go for it. Realistically it won't be long before she is probably asking for expensive pay-per-child activities and to find one that's fun, able to take a full class and won't break the bank is hard.

If your daughter would really prefer a smaller group, or there is an activity she'd love to do that would not work, be a logistical nightmare or break the bank with that many children - go for a smaller party.

I agree that whole class parties would be the norm and a hall party is perfect. It will be a nice way to get to know everyone. Keep in mind that end of October is half term, so that may impact everyone’s availability, though I don’t think there are huge amounts of people who go away for that one. On the flip side, it may mean everyone is bored and all respond yes, so something to keep in mind.

Whole class party!

My daughter had already virtually forgotten about her best friends from nursery by the October half term. Unless you're going to meet up with them regularly, those relationships are effectively ended. So no I would not invite old nursery friends.

Your daughter's class would have had a good 6 weeks together by the time of the party. She'll certainly know everyone better, but might not necessarily be at the point of a couple of good friends yet. Best friends could be changing by the day still.

Whole class parties at this age are great (for them). The kids will have a great time no matter what, and it's a great opportunity for the parents to get to know each other too.
