16 month old waking screaming and refusing to settle in cot

My 16 month old, has started waking up screaming in the night and when I get him out and cuddle him he’s ok and falls asleep but as soon as I go to his room and attempt to put him in his cot he screams and cries again. Whenever I leave the room he’ll cry. I don’t know what to try, I’m a first time mum and I am drained.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Is this behaviour new? It sounds like separation anxiety which is very common at this age. Unfortunately I don't have any advice as my DC3 is almost 2 and still does this regularly in the night and always has done. They still sleep in our bedroom for this reason because at least we don't have to traipse up and down to another room. My older 2 children never really behaved like this thankfully.

Get his ears checked in case it is earache.

How long has it been going on? Maybe he's sick or having nightmares. When mine cries out like this I just sleep next to her (she has a floor bed now, but when she was in the crib I'd sleep on the floor). Being close by/maybe hearing someone else breathing seems to help.

It’s been going on for the last 2 weeks. The last 2 nights he’s woke within an hour of being in there to go to sleep? He’s been in his own room since 3 months old as it was what was best for us.
