Has anyone else noticed school uniform skirts getting much shorter?

So it’s that time of year where proud mums and dads are posting this school years first day picture of their boys and girls in the front of the front door. I get it , it’s cute and a good memory and way of comparing each year to how they have grown.

Now what I’m really concerned about is the amount of girls in ridiculous short skirts I’m not talking just above the knee I’m talking thigh level or just covering their bottom. As a parent I would never ever let my daughter ( if I had one I’ve got a son ) wear anything like that out and about let alone as a school uniform ? I’m talking 12/13/14 year old girls with shorter skirts than I see on the typical Saturday night out? Has anyone else noticed this as this year it seems to have got worse and worst still the schools are allowing it ?

An old colleague of mine puts up those front door pics of his two teen/tween daughters. It actually makes me feel embarrassed to look they are so short.

I can't believe as there Dad he is ok with them wearing skirts that short to school and putting photos on Facebook of it!

I’m not surprised by the skirts - I’m surprised by the social media photos from proud parents. I’d wait until I got to the end of the street to roll my skirt up 😂

It was midi skirts when I was in a school ... Thankfully!

You should have seen my mum’s in 1967! Posh girls boarding school and everything. 😂 They would make them kneel on the floor before chapel and if the skirt didn’t touch the floor they got a demerit. And then the second they got outside of the teacher’s eye line they would roll them back up again.

Haha yes I’ve done this in the past but that was after I’d left the house so mum and dad didn’t know, I’m just shocked the parents don’t mind them already being ridiculously short!

Yea, but its a teenage girl's right to show off her bum at school don't you know. It's victim blaming to mention common decency.

It's been this way for years. Usually they start off ok in Year 7, then gradually start rolling the waistband over more and more each year. I used to ask my daughter to roll hers down/tug it down when she left the house. She would walk around the corner and roll it up again. Ultimately most wear black opaque tights and shoes, so everything is covered anyway and my daughter insisted a short skirt was more comfortable with the tights.

Occasionally school had a teacher on the gate telling them to adjust their uniform. But really, as long as they are wearing uniform, turning up on time and ready to learn, that's a win at secondary these days

They wear shorts under.

Our local school does enforce knee length on school premises but the girls roll it up once they've left school. I imagine it's the same for lots of schools

I’m sure I will get plenty of criticism for this, but you can basically tell from the length of the girls’ school skirts whether they go to a public or private school where I live in Aus. Public, barely covering arse cheeks, private what most people would think of as a reasonable skirt length for teenage girls as whether or not you agree schools make a big deal about uniform. A lot are cut in a way that even rolling them won’t make them excessively short.

I live by a secondary school and drive by as they walk out on my school run.

id say skirts are a little lower as it’s the start of a term but as it goes on I have to try to keep alert whilst driving and manoeuvring around cars and desperately trying not to see arse cheeks on display! 🤣

I was at school mid 80s to early 90s (secondary). Yes, we rolled our skirts up but they were nothing like as short as today’s skirts which barely covers bums. I’ve seen so many bum cheeks and gussets and it I hate it. A school near me has just made trousers uniform for all (no skirts at all) and I wish they’d all follow suit. They’ve done it quite sensibly imho as they allow trousers which look fairly fashionable and there haven’t been any complaints so far.

I work in a secondary school and think the skirts as just as short as they were when I was at school 25 years ago

In the 80s it was good quality midi skirts or slightly longer with chelsea boots so I never did this, it would have been deeply unfashionable and odd if any of my peers did this (south London, might have been different elsewhere)

I think parents need to parent.

Ours had to be just below the knee. I can’t believe it when I see how short skirts are today.

If you think skirts today are short I wonder what you'd think of the fashion in the 1970s when mini skirts were very mini. As long as they were the school colours and teamed with tights that was acceptable.

Nothing much changes in 50 years.

My dd is 4 and just started school, 5 in November. Now as much as she is tall for her age she’s fairly slim (not skinny just average) and I have found that even when buying ages 6-7 for her that a) there is not much give in the pinafores and b) they only just skim the top of her knees! Infact I got her some 8-9 summer dresses as they were on offer and thought we wouldn’t need them til
next year but obvs she wanted to wear them 🤣 and they ONLY JUST cover her knees!!! She’s not freakishly tall so I dread to think how long they would be on an actual average 8-9 yr old 😱

I live in NZ and I've never seen any girl in a skirt as short as those frequently discussed on MN, and most of the girls I see are at state schools. The local school has a kilt in winter and some are ankle length, but even the summer skirt is never indecently short.

I was at school in the 70s, although not in the UK, and while we rolled our skirts up they were never short enough for knickers to be seen - we didn't wear tights at all - and short skirts were frowned upon by the school.
