Would you take a 4-year-old and 3-month-old on this boat trip?

My daughter (9) won a free return boat trip (4 people) at a local event recently, which needs to be used by the end of the month.

However, we also have a 4 (nearly 5yo) and a 3mo baby.

Wondering whether to take them or not and interested in others opinions.

It is quite a small boat (see photo)
I know older ones would have life jackets but not sure if they would have one for a little baby! It says babies can travel but just abit unsure whether it's a good idea.

4yo might well be fine but just abit worried incase she gets bored and moves about and wobbles the boat or something! (It says its a 45 min trip each way with a stop in the middle for lunch)

If either or both younger ones don't come me and DH would do a trip with eldest each and swap in the middle, then all get together for lunch part.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

No, I think it’ll be more stress than it’s worth.
DH takes the 9yr old and you meet them after with the others.

I agree with the others.

Does the boat go in the sea, a lake or something else?

It's along a river.

Thanks everyone! To be honest I hadn't even considered the possibility of taking the baby or him even being allowed anyway until I saw it said about babies being free on the website, but even then have been 99% certain it wouldn't be a good idea anyway as we are very safety conscious.

4yo was more on the fence...we went on a much larger boat trip which was about 40 mins recently and she was a nightmare the whole time running about being boisterous as she was bored.Might be different on a smaller boat where she kind of HAD to sit still, and can see the water etc, but it still feels risky as if she WAS to play up it could be really detrimental to safety.9yo and her also can end up feeding off each other with arguing/fighting etc wheras if 9yo is on her own there would be no such concerns.

My mum could come along, or perhaps a friend and their parent might be nice.DD wanted me and her dad to be there hence the one trip each thing.
Did think about getting someone to look after baby, but think he feels abit young to leave yet as he is mainly breastfed, quite hard to settle and has only been used to being with me or DH.

Thanks for the helpful advice...would hate anything to ruin it for DD as it was a special prize!

Not at all!

HoppingPavlova · 03/09/2026 12:22

No way. Why not just you or DH go with your 9yo DD and invite a friend of hers with a parent.

Shinyhappyapple · 03/09/2026 12:23

No. Wouldn’t even go on that myself!

I'd be more worried about the 4 year old to be honest. They're likely to be restless and try to run around or lean over the side. At least you can hold onto the baby. And obviously this all depends on the life jacket situation.

Leave baby at home with DH and let the older two enjoy it depending on younger ones attention span.

We would have just had one parent take the boat with DD and the other stay home with the little ones.

If your four year old is not going to behave on a boat then she misses out.

Taking a baby on a boat is fine. They usually just sleep...

Looking at the size of the boat absolutely no way !!!!!
