Just a tired mummy moan

Two nights in a row with very little sleep due to my 2-year old repeatedly waking up, coming to my bed and then tossing all night. At 5.30am he insisted on getting up, but tired and grumpy, needs to be carried around all the time. At 6.30 I couldn’t do this any longer so I put him in the pram and here we are, walking through the park. He’s fine by the way, running around and watching ducks, with a very exhausted and severely sleep deprived mum running after him. We’re almost alone in the park and I’m incredibly jealous right now of everyone who can have a lie in on a Sunday and a relaxed morning coffee.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I hear you. 10 years into children and it’s not improved for me.

It’s hard very hard, It does get easier some actually learn to sleep and stay asleep and those that don’t can be left an instant breakfast and few toys in your bedroom by 4 and you can keep dozing.
Wearing the child out does work but it usually wears you out as well, often more than the child.

I sympathise, it's very hard.
My almost 5 year old still wakes multiple times, takes a good hour to settle to bed and never sleeps later than 6am.
I'm hoping reception year helps him to sleep better.

Marroon · 23/08/2026 08:14

My DH and I alternate who gets a quiet coffee in bed on the weekend. Is this something you can bring in?

But the waking early while being exhausted and whiney is the worst part about young children, mine 2 year old does it too l.

ZoeyT · 23/08/2026 08:21

Oh my god, I could have written this almost word for word! Its uncanny.
Sorry I don't have any advice but know you're not alone and the constant sleep deprivation is torture.

We don't live in the UK so we're an hour ahead of you and thankfully there's a coffee van in our park that opens at 9am!
Like yours, my DS is as happy as Larry playing in the playground whilst I want to curl up in a ball on this bench and sleep for a hundred years 😵‍💫

5 & 2 year old here op

5 year old now sleeps in until 9.30/10 on weekends (if she’s up earlier she can be left to it)

2 year old flipped from 4am wakes and starting the day between 4&5earlier in the summer to suddenly sleeping to 7.30/8 since he dropped his nap!!!

so I hope better sleep coming your way

i do enjoy an early park visit though !! Get yourself a nice coffee and pastry at a cafe!!

I think you should only whisper that on a thread like this 😂 There’s almost zero chance OP’s five year old will sleep until 10am on the weekends. I’ve literally never heard of this from a child that age. It’s incredibly unusual and probably not a benchmark she needs.

Traitorsclaudia · 23/08/2026 08:51

I feel your pain. My DC are older and have been awake before 7am every day this summer apart from one day where we went to a wedding and then went to bed at 11pm so they slept in till 7.30am 😭 5yo came in at 6.20am this morning.

Can you get a nap in later?

Well, a glimmer of hope is better than no hope at all 😂

Whoever said their child was sleeping in until 9:30-10 on a weekend. No way are they going to bed at a normal bedtime like 7pm. My daughter would sleep those hours too if she went to bed at 10/11pm!

She’s asleep by 9 /9.30 on weekends / school holidays

so yeah I don’t really care too much about 7pm bedtime with her

when she’s back at school different story a bit earlier to bed - still struggle to get her up for 7 though she likes her sleep

I dont put the 2 year old to bed at 7 either it’s more like half 8 🤷‍♀️ 7pm is so early and I’m barely even done dinner by then after we get in from work. And summer evenings we go out to the park for bike rides and fresh air

maybe sometimes the obsession with 7pm is part of the problem - kids are going to bed too early so then wake up early

hopspot · 23/08/2026 09:26

I remember those days! I can remember struggling through a work day after almost no sleep thinking I had no idea what people were talking about!
it gets better. Mine now sleep in until 7/8 on the weekend. Grassroots sports means no lie ins after this but in comparison with 5am it’s wonderful!

Phineyj · 23/08/2026 09:26

Well if you're particularly lucky you get one like mine who wakes up on the dot of 5.45am whether you put her to bed at 7pm or midnight... even as a teen she doesn't exactly sleep in.

Good luck OP!

Marroon · 23/08/2026 10:10

@Fupoffyagrasshole maybe sometimes the obsession with 7pm is part of the problem - kids are going to bed too early so then wake up early

Regardless of bedtime 13 hours would be really in the upper end of sleep and wouldn’t really be typical. Most 5 year olds who might go to bed at 7pm still aren’t sleeping until 8am. Your child just has very high sleep needs.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 23/08/2026 10:18

@Marroon this is true she loves her sleep

she didn’t drop her nap til 3ish

whearas my 2 year old hasn’t napped for ages

5 year old also goes asleep in the car pretty much every journey - 2 year old rarely !

if we take a train or flight shel also always take a nap and she’d say I’m tired and just go off her her bed 🤷‍♀️

so yeah all kids are different and have different sleep needs

and I hope the op finds what works for her child and gets some more sleep soon :) x

I don't understand what jobs people work that allow them to work full time and commute and put a child down at 7pm.

My 2 year old goes to bed at 8.30 ish, sometimes more like 8.45. Fridays it's more like 9. I wouldn't be able to spend any time with him after work otherwise.

Or maybe you start your work very early? We only leave the house at 8/8.30.

LittleGreenDragons · 23/08/2026 13:11

Wait until your child has left home and you get a rescue cat to keep you company.

Those 3am zoomies followed by 4am very loud wailing followed by 5am pulling bedsheets off you make me long for a two year old human 😬 (She didn't used to be this way but she's housebound atm).

Basically I hear you. And trump you 😝

Brittany21 · 23/08/2026 13:11

It’s incredibly hard but It does get so much better. My 11 year old now outsleeps me at the weekend regularly surfacing at 10am or later

Fupoffyagrasshole · 23/08/2026 13:14

@ToddlerMum4748282 yep exactly we only home at 6.30/6.45 so impossible to have the kids fed and bathed and books and bed before 8.30 for me

We're teachers so out of the house 7am, back by 5.

Most of our friends WFH at least some days, or one starts early and finishes early while the other parent does the opposite.

In our house I work 7-3 and mostly WFH. Husband is home at 5:10pm. Our DD is usually in bed at 6:30. It makes it easier in the mornings where she's up at about 7.

Peonies12 · 23/08/2026 20:51

Stop the nap, he’ll sleep longer overnight.
