Child being exploited?

Birdcatdog · 18/08/2026 20:34

My 18 year old has announced she wants to move into her girlfriends family home. Apparently the mum is going travelling for 6 months and has offered my child to move in for £280 a month- not including food.
My child has just started their first job this week and the gf's mum knows it a decent wage -£27 grand.
I feel like the only person benefiting from this arrangement is the gf's mum and it feels like my child is being exploited. The mum would have to keep up the cost of her house whilst travelling as her own child will be living there. £280 is too much in my opinion? £50 a month would cover any costs but my child moving in wouldn't even be and additional person as the mum is leaving?
They live 10 minutes from our home and I have explained to my daughter that its a waste of money as she goes and stays at the gf's whenever she wants now. My child has specifically taken a year out to work and save for living cost when she goes to uni next year.
I feel like she is making bad financial decisions for no reason. She might not even know this girl in a year. They have only been together since February.
We dont have any strict rules at our house so I am confused on why she thinks she needs "independence". All of the things shes listed as independence such as shopping, cooking ect she could do at mine for free.
What am I going do to? Realistically I know I cant stop her. Im so sad

your child is an adult earning 27k who wants to have sex with her girlfriend in their own place whenever she wants. £280 is well worth that

Dancer48 · 18/08/2026 23:25

Not a child and where are you getting 6 grand a year? More like £1680 for 6 months and she moves back home when the mum comes back.

Birdcatdog · 18/08/2026 21:22

Both to be honest. I am hurt that she wants to leave and I think shes making a poor financial choice. We saved all her life to give her a modest trust fund, talked about being sensible when she got it. She's only got the job because my partner gave it to her. I dont think she is mature enough to be making these decisions. I am worried shes throwing away opportunities for a partner she has only been with for a short amount of time. Swapping a stable loving home for a precarious one based on a relationship. What happens if they argue or break up?

so if she goes you won't let her back?? if she's so immature and only got a job she doesn't deserve cos of nepotism, you could always get dp to sack her and then she'd be forced to stay with you 🤷🏻

😂 no chance of pregnancy. Its the dropping out of education when the time comes im worried about. I am worried about how 2 teens are going to navigate a relationship living together so soon. I am worried that she is wasting min 6 grand a year which could be better used elsewhere- investing or travelling

it's 6 months so not years.

280 x 6 = 1680

even if she stays for a year, it's 3360.

where do you get 6k from?

JLou08 · 18/08/2026 23:42

Firstly, not a child, she is an adult.
Secondly that's very, very cheap board. It's not exploitation at all. That's like saying anyone who takes in a lodger is exploiting them.

Birdcatdog · 18/08/2026 21:42

Yes and it was the worst decision I ever made to move out with her dad at 18. I dont want my daughter repeating my mistakes

Well you were stymied because you had a baby presumably this isn't on their cards for the foreseeable future?

OneQuirkyPanda · 18/08/2026 23:54

I think she’s more likely to not go to uni because your partner got her a 27k a year job at 18 years old.

She’s an adult, you can tell her you think it’s a bad decision, but ultimately it’s her choice, I think it would be very appealing to most young adults to be able to live with their gf/bf in a house for only £280 a month. I would have bitten her hand off at that age tbh.

SeriouslyAreYouSure · 18/08/2026 23:54

You're hurting and because you're hurting, you're not thinking rationally.

its £1680 for six months, to live with her girlfriend & have a bit of independence. It won't do any harm to grow up a bit in this year before she goes off to uni, it'll be good for her.

I don't think the Woman needs to charge her 280 a month and I wouldn't in the same situation, but it's actually not a huge amount of money out for £27,000 salary,

I agree with everything you said, including giving an 18 year-old a £27,000 job in a gap year. I wonder if her partner would pay any other 18-year-old £27,000 a year to do the same job and if she's doing it to a standard the partner is happy with.???

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 18/08/2026 23:57

She's an adult not a child, so "no".

Leaving to go to uni across the country i can accept and have always encouraged. Going 10 minutes down the road and wasting money to live in someone elses house is a hard pill to swallow

Your daughter wants to experience adult independence and to live with her girlfriend. It is not a personal rejection of you.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 19/08/2026 00:11

She wants to live with her girlfriend and ride her senseless in every room of the house without having to worry her mummy is there listening.

Its a rite of passage. Let her go 🎈.

EvieBB · 19/08/2026 00:22

alexdgr8 · 18/08/2026 21:03

So will it be just the 2 of them living in that place?
In which case I can see why she wants to ship out.
Especially as you sound as if you baby her.

She's not babying her .....she's giving her the brilliant chance to save up for uni by living rent free. Best chance ever to save for the future I say....

This isn’t about you daughter this is about you being hurt that she wants to move out

where do you get 6k from?

Rounded up to 300 a month for rent for ease, added 200 for food and toiletries. 500 a month. Thus is not including bus travel pass or mobile contract or clothes ect. Shes planning on living there for the year , gf mum is travelling for 6 months.

She is literally planning on subletting the rooms for money and sees my daughter as an easy option to make that money. So her daughter is not living with strangers.

Yes it is the standard wage for the role and the team is heavily filled with young people. One is exactly my daughter age

😂 she stays there often and I am sex positive so it doesn't bother me. My point is she could continue staying over but living her for free.

Ok i admit exploited is dramatic. I am just feeling emotional

its disrespectful to all the teenagers that are truly exploited for you to throw that word about. Think about how much worse it could be

I have already admitted i was too dramatic and emotional in saying that. However I still think gf mum has encouraged this as it will benefit her financially. Which is in my opinion taking advantage of a teenager

Her travel plans were already budgeted for. The mjm
offered £65 a week to stay in her home, your daughter is free to decline. Maybe look into real cases of child exploitation to give yourself some perspective. Your child wants to live away, it’s nothing to do with you - let her make decisions.

I know very well what people are referring to when they are talking about exploitation cases but if we want to get technical about the definition in Oxford dictionary it literally states about someone manipulating circumstances to benefit themseves which is what is happening here.

Child being exploited?

Also part of the travel plan is to subletting the rooms for money. She sees my daughter as an easy opportunity to do that
