Bites on daughter

Hi, anyone any good at identifying bites?

we have just moved to a new house and are waking up with bites. We all have a few, mostly on shoulders, but my poor 5 year old has loads. They are itchy for her and angry looking where she has scratched them.

I think they could be mosquitoes but I haven’t seen or heard any. I covered her in ‘Skin-so-soft’, plugged in a mosquito killer diffuser and she slept with the window closed last night but has still woken up with a couple of new ones (and a heat rash she was so hot with the window closed).

im dreading it’s something living in the carpets of the new house-they are pretty ancient!

has anyone had any experience similar? Photo of bites attached

thanks!

Possibly bed bugs. Is there any blood spotting on your sheets?

Swissmeringue · 14/08/2026 15:50

Fleas possibly? Did the old occupants have pets? Might be worth getting some indorex and spraying the rooms, wash all the bedding, hoover all the carpets and clean all the skirting boards.

Just a suggestion but they do look a bit like the flea bites my daughter got from my mum's cat once.

I wondered about both of these… no spotting on sheets and I’ve had a good look in mattress seams but (luckily) no evidence.
I was at the vet today with the cat so asked her! She said unlikely fleas but couldn’t be sure.
i wondered about dust mites in carpets?

I'd say fleas, we had them in the second house we bought, i was told , the fleas live on the dogs. When the dogs leave the house the fleas live in the carpet. You may not see them because they are tiny, we used smoke bombs , you can buy online.

Just googled flea bites and they do look similar. Just strange they are all over her rather than on ankles only.

She is probably on the floor more than you are - playing with toys, watching TV etc

With my daughter they were all over her back, I think maybe the fleas were on the sofa and she lay on there?

Fleas can wake up when you move into a new house if they're living in the carpet. Not sure if bed bugs work the same way. On the plus side fleas can actually be killed by vacuuming them up.

My granddaughter (sleeps on bottom bunk) kept waking up after house move with bites like these. Eventually my daughter spotted a flea jumping around on the bed… Cue huge de-fleaing exercise of carpets etc. It took a few goes. (Previous owners had a dog.)

Quercusrobur · 14/08/2026 21:24

Thanks everyone for the replies. We are thinking possibly fleas or something in the carpets as the bites on us appeared after we wore clothes we’d left on the carpet (and in areas in contact with those clothes-eg my bra!). Think we’ll give flea spray a try and see if that makes a difference. Not seen any fleas but they are tiny I think…

Fleas are small but they jump, so they aren’t impossible to spot.
The bites could be fleas, or if you’re leaving windows open at night they could be mosquitoes or midges.
They don’t look like bed bug bites to me.

TammiesBackHurts · 14/08/2026 21:29

What is a flea?

Imdunfer · 14/08/2026 21:31

Walk around your house with bare feet. If there are fleas in the carpet they will jump onto your skin when they sense the food source!

mumumental · 14/08/2026 21:52

Vacuum every day and empty the bag onto the bin outside. The vibration helps them hay hatch and you can be rid of them more quickly.
