Would you ring the GP about possible threadworms in a 19 month old?

I’m a little worried my 19 month old might have threadworms but it’s maybe too early to tell? Last night he had an itchy anus and was very restless all night which is unlike him. We gave Calpol as we thought teething but it didn’t help at all so possibly not.

I checked his poo this morning but can’t say for certain if what’s in there is undigested food or a threadworm. We stayed with a friend who had a dog recently, and DS is also at nursery. Would you ring GP for a script or wait a day to be more sure? It’s only been a day of symptoms and I don’t really want to medicate us all if it’s not actually threadworms obviously, but I also don’t want it to get out of hand and for him to be uncomfortable. He’s too young for pharmacy according to NHS.

Dogs can't get/transmit human threadworms, just to put your mind at rest.

It is possible to catch them at nursery. I'd contact the GP for treatment and take care to keep his hands and nails very clean, hot wash bedding and treat the whole family. Threadworms usually wriggle/move so are fairly easy to identify.

They are incredibly common and most kids/adults have some form of parasite. We are a country that doesn’t acknowledge this much at all and especially young kids who constantly put fingers in mouths etc will get them. I treat my kids every 6 months with ovex you can do this from age 2 but any younger it needs to be a prescription- make sure to hot wash their bedding and towels etc x
