Bum wiping 🤦🏼‍♀️

Son turns 5 in November. No problem going to the toilet and seeing to himself, that’s never been an issue, but we still find that he’s not great at wiping himself. We encourage him and talk him through the best technique and god bless him he is trying but he’s not really got the knack yet. I’d leave him to it and say it’s a learning curve but if he doesn’t wipe well enough (or we help wipe him) then he ends up with a terribly sore bum.

Any tips or is it just one of these things they eventually get the hang of? I’m torn between being more hands off and giving him total independence which he has otherwise, and wiping him to save him from sore bums!

He doesn’t ask us to and he likes being independent so that’s not the issue. Just don’t want him suffering from not wiping properly.

‘Tell me when you think you’ve finished and we’ll do one extra one to check’ might be a good tactic.

Combined with teaching him to keep wiping until the paper is clean.

Yes to the first post. I also showed him the video of the dad with the pink balloons teaching his daughters to wipe. Google those words you'll find it!

Try toilet wipes and then tissue after.

Would something like andrex hygeine wipes be of use @Tractorspotting?

Maybe use Wype gel (aloe Vera gel you put on tissue to make normal loo roll like a wet wipe but without the terrible ecological impact).
I've found it gets the area cleaner quicker and my little loves it and it encourages her to wipe more

That’s what we do at the moment. Mummy and daddy do a “double check”. It feels like there’s a long road ahead to full wiping dexterity 😬
