How do I balance being a newlywed while making sure my teenager still feels like a priority?

I could really use some advice, especially from people who grew up in blended families or parents who've gone through this.
I'm 44 and getting married at the end of this month.

My first husband died 8 years ago, and since then it's just been me and my son, who's now 15. For all those years, he's had me almost entirely to himself. We built our own little life together, and honestly, we've always been really close.

We have our traditions. We'd go out for dinner just the two of us, have movie nights, spend weekends together, take random drives, and every year we'd take two trips together that were just mom and son. Those memories mean everything to me, and I know they do to him too.

Now life is changing. My fiancé has three teenagers, and thankfully they're genuinely lovely kids. My son gets along really well with all of them, especially my fiancé's son. They've become really good friends, which honestly makes me so happy.

Once we're married and living together, his kids will be with us most weekends and sometimes during the week. I know that's going to naturally change how my time is divided.

I also want to be honest with myself. Everyone talks about the "honeymoon phase" of a marriage, and I imagine the first several months will be exciting. We'll want time together as a newly married couple, go on dates, experience all those firsts together, and I don't think pretending otherwise would be realistic.

But at the same time, I keep thinking about my son. For eight years, it's been him and me. Now suddenly there's a husband, three step-siblings, family dinners, weekends together... and I'm scared he'll quietly feel like he lost something, even if he never says it out loud.

One thing I'm especially worried about is when my husband and I go out on date nights or attend events together. Before, if I went somewhere, it was usually with my son or by myself. He's never really had to watch me leave with a partner while he stayed home. Maybe he'll be completely fine, but as his mom, I can't help wondering if it'll feel strange or lonely for him at first..

I don't want him to ever feel like he was replaced or that my new marriage pushed him into second place. Obviously a marriage deserves time and attention too, and I want to be a good wife as well. I'm just trying to figure out how to balance both without either relationship feeling neglected.

I know change is inevitable, and I know he won't always need me the same way he did when he was little. I guess I'm just hoping to make this transition as gentle as possible for him because, at the end of the day, he'll always be my son, and I never want him to question how important he is to me.

Is it for religious reasons that you're not trying living together before getting married, especially when combining all these teens?

Everyone talks about the "honeymoon phase" of a marriage this is from another age, where couples only started sharing a bed and a home and haviny a lot of private time with each other from their wedding night.

Mulledjuice · 02/08/2026 11:14

You say you want to be a "good wife". What does that mean to you?

SoScarletItWas · 02/08/2026 11:14

You wrote like it’s inevitable that your traditions with your son will end. Why should they? Of course you can carry on doing dinners, events, even trips just the two of you. You don’t suddenly have to include other kids or stop them.

Your new husband may want to maintain time with his kids too. Time apart doing your own thing is healthy in a marriage.

If he’s a good husband he should be supportive of this. Unless he’s looking to palm all the kids off to you and won’t let you do anything alone.

Have you not been dating your husband to be ?
How has your son coped then ?

Don't take it seriously, I meant just spending equal time. If it's sounded something like I'm trying to "Submissive" wife, sorry it was not my intention

You should talk to each of them separately about expectations following your marriage. I would have thought that should have been done way before now.

rubyslippers · 02/08/2026 11:20

surely you’ve been on dates etc
does your son get on with your fiance
Blending your households will be huge - your routines with your DS can and should stay the same epically if he has his GCSEs next year
do you think your fiance wont let this happen?

minipie · 02/08/2026 11:26

You really need to try living together for a lengthy period before you commit to marriage. It’s not sensible or fair on your son to marry someone, move in with them and blend families without first testing if that works for everyone.

SoScarletItWas · 02/08/2026 11:27

On your other thread:

In early July, I take a 3–4 day trip with just my son. Then later in July, we do a week-long trip with me, my son, my fiancé, and his kids so we all get some quality time together as a blended family. Then in early August, my fiancé and I take a trip with just the two of us.

Yet on this one
he’s never really had to watch me leave with a partner while he stays home

🤔 then where is son when you take this August trip just you and fiancé?

My point is, from your other thread it sounds like you already have a good blend and as I posted earlier, I have no idea why you think this should change when you’re married.

OrsolaRosso · 02/08/2026 11:29

Have a talk with your son and agree which of your traditions are most important to him and want to continue. And which he may perhaps be growing out of. At 15 he is probably wanting to spend more time with his friends.
Make sure that your new DH is aware of what you and your DS will continue to do.
Things change in life as people grow and relationships develop, and your son needs to adjust to this aspect of life too.
And going forward there is also the opportunity to introduce new family traditions involving all of you. It's possible for this to happen gently and sensitively, so no one feels left out.

RoseField1 · 02/08/2026 11:30

Why are you getting married before living together? What are your respecive financial situations?

I meant after the marriage. I'm talking about balancing my time with my son, which will naturally be divided once we're all living together. We've never all lived in the same house for an extended period, so this is new for all of us. I never said we were having any problems I was simply asking for advice on how to manage the transition and make sure my son still feels loved and included.

flippinnorastights · 02/08/2026 11:32

Surely even if you’re married your son is your priority. That mean dinners and days out for the 2 of you, going away with just him, making sure you spend one on one time with him

a second marriage with existing children simply cannot replicate a first marriage in terms of how you spend time together with your husband. Your son has been through a huge trauma and you have to make sure that nothing you do in your new marriage makes him feel lesser.

ps I am also widowed. I’m not speaking from a place of naivity but from a place where I know that my kids have to know they are still the most important people in my life and a husband / partner has to come 2nd

Never said you were having problems either. But you have a good routine going already. Why should this change?

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 02/08/2026 11:32

You sound very thoughtful. Keep doing things regularly with your son. That will give your husband time alone with his kids too.

SirChenjins · 02/08/2026 11:33

Are you the poster whose DH died 6 years ago, and after this marriage you're moving to Germany from London to live there? Or something along those lines? It sounds familiar - but apologies if not.

JustMeSimply · 02/08/2026 11:39

Totally get this it was also just me and my son from 6mnths old till he was 13 then I met someone actually by accident, I found keeping son fully informed as we were good communicators anyhow, always ran any changes by him to get thoughts and feelings. We also made sure every other week we did something just with him that he always enjoyed and luckily from marriage to now he will turn 18 soon it has been smooth sailing. He gets on very well with dh they messaged about on WhatsApp all day but funny enough it's dh he has been going to the last year about concerns aswell recently girls stuff haha. He also has another 3 siblings now who adore there big brother and again always put teen first with discussions as to how would you feel if there were more etc

Sunshine1500 · 02/08/2026 11:46

so you don’t live together but will buy a home together after you are married?
if so going from just the two of you to an extra four people will be difficult for everyone.
your husband will need to make time for his own kids and that’ll give you time with still the two of you.
ideally I’d have waited a year or so till my son left school and finished his exams before I moved in with 4 other people.
