Help.. accidentally didn’t sterilise the Nuby rapid cool :(

Baby is 5 months old, mostly breastfed, past week have started introducing a bottle of formula. Made with the Nuby rapid cool. Don’t use the hotshot method since I only use it once I day I just bung it all in there, the formula and boiling water together. I normally sterilise the actual flask with sterilising liquid or in the cold water steriliser. But this time I just forgot 😭 I’m so worried and only remembered once baby finished the bottle! Will she be okay?? I cleaned the flask with antibacterial washing up liquid and water prior to making up the feed.

I'm no expert, but if you've used boiling water, and she's 5 months old, I think it will be just fine. The boiling water should kill anything in the flask anyway.

Yes, the bottle was pretty clean before you started.
Was it ideal? no.
But you are almost certainly going to be fine. If she's ill over the next 24-48 hoyrs, remember what you've done, but otherwise forget
about it.

Seriously this is a non issue? I'm surprised it's your 3rd child! In a couple weeks you'll be weaning and sterilising goes out the window. I made formula in boiling water, but stopped sterilising the bottles beforehand around 5 months.

In these circumstances I try to remember that millions of children survived without sterilisation for a very long time before us. I would feel the same way as you in the moment but I’m sure she will be fine.

Baby will be fine. Just wait until they are more mobile/weaning and EVERYTHING (and I do mean everything) goes into their mouths. Pretty sure mud/the dog/gravel isn't sterile....

Sterilising the bottles is because formula can contain a nasty bacteria that makes babies ill, as the powder isnt sterile. Nothing to do with age or weaning You are supposed to keep sterilising until you stop using formula.

@percyy8 , i wouldn't worry too much at this point. If your little one becomes ill in the few days, make sure you tell any HCP that there is a risk from the sterilising oversight as it will help them identify whats making her ill quicker. But hopefully she'll be fine and your formula is all good.

The boiling water is what kills any bacteria in the formula. Sterilising the bottles is for anything growing in the bottle itself.

I'm pretty sure in America they only sterilise for the first couple of months. She's 5 months old and should have a pretty good immunity by now.

There is a bacteria in formula which is why sterilising is recommended but it is very much a belt and braces approach. There is a lot of steps added in the formula process to make the chance of contamination as tiny as possible. It’s why the tin says to only be open for 4 weeks and why you use boiling water.

I didn’t sterilise the rapid cool because I didn’t have sterilising solution and it didn’t fit in my steriliser. I would wash with hot water and washing up liquid but a tin was never open more than a month and boiling water was always used with the rapid cool. I also used a perfect prep though and health visitors don’t like those because they pose a small risk.
