2 year old constantly falling out of bed

2 year old DD has just gone into a toddler bed, not a floor bed but also not high, has a little drawer underneath her bed. Since going into this a week ago she has fell out at least 4 times a night, I have put a duvet on the floor next to her bed to cushion the fall, multiple times I go in there and she’s nearly hanging off the bed by her head. When she falls out she doesn’t hurt herself she doesn’t even wake she stays asleep on the floor until I pick her up. Should I buy her a new bed with sides on or will she get used to it? I looked into bed rails but they look like they just slot under the mattress and she is very curious and think she’d pull them out causing a danger to herself if they’re heavy, I find her lifting her mattress a lot when she’s playing in there. Has anyone had this situation, what did you do?

Pool noodles under the sheets as a barrier to stop her!

DaisyChain505 · 27/07/2026 21:24

Get a pool noodle and put it underneath the sheet along the edge of the bed.

Look at Amazon at bed bumpers, they are foam based and not a hazard at all. Had the same problem with my 2 year old and has never rolled out since we used this, we don't even use it now unless travelling away because it has helped her get used to not rolling around!

Another vote for a pool noodle under the sheet

My son did this. I just kept putting him back into bed and everyday he stopped

Ikea do a solid bed rail that fixes to the frame, but it depends on the style of the bed frame, it is adjustable though so will fit various widths of wood/metal, we've used it since our DD changed to a toddler bed with no issues.

We also have a travel bed rail that slots under the mattress but it's a bit flimsy, there are straps that go all the way under the mattress though to anchor it, so you could definitely rig something that way for a permanent solution.

Have you still got her cot mattress? We put that next to the toddler bad so that when they inevitably fell out they landed on another mattress and slept there.

Bed rails usually have a piece that does under the mattress, she can’t just pull it out. Why even move a toddler to a bed without having already bought one/realised this will happen.

No her cot was one that converts to a toddler bed so using the same mattress, good idea though

She was climbing out of her cot so had to do something asap and her cot was one that converts to a toddler bed, also looking online majority don’t have rails on the side so clearly not everyone uses them, why act like it’s a necessity when it clearly isn’t

Another here to suggest a pool noodle under the sheet. It will stop her rolling until she becomes more familiar with staying in the bed.

PassMeTheCookies · 27/07/2026 21:57

Bed guards are surprisingly durable. She won’t be able to pull it out. I think I’d get one.

Divebar2021 · 27/07/2026 21:58

You can buy those zippy sheets that have the duvet cover that zips to the base sheet. I think they might be made by Gro…. But it’s been a while since I used mine.

NuffSaidSam · 27/07/2026 21:59

Do the pool noodle hack.

But also, just let her sleep on the floor! Put something soft down like a camping mattress or yoga mat or inflatable mattress or something similar and leave her to it.

A bed rail will stop her. Cuggl do a toddler bed one. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/4567855

Well she keeps falling out so clearly it is a necessity

If you don't fancy buying a pool noodle just roll up a large towel and put it under her fitted sheet at the edge. I did it for my son who's 3 and went into a toddler bed fairly recently, he's only fallen out once and it's been a month or 2. Just saves you buying anything :)
