I hope this is the right place to post this. I am starting a part time postgrad library qualification this year, with a view to working in scholl libraries eventually. I really just want to know if any of you do work in school libraries, and if so, what do you do in a typical working day, how do the hours work, what are the holidays, etc.

I have looked at the CILIP site etc, but decent job descriptions seem to be a bit few and far between, so really wanted to get some answers from the coal face, as it were!

I have been working in academic libraroes for donkey's years...time for a change!

My friend is a school librarian in N.Ireland. She goes in early and opens the library before 'school' starts so early arrivals can go in. Thus missing traffic problems and leaving her dh to sort out their kids! She finishes early as a result. And has negotiated a month of unpaid leave in the summer on top of leave. She also attends 'head of dept' meetings. So in her case it is an excellent set up, but relies on a school management structure who value her. (I am a qualified librarian, there are a few around the site - but I have always worked in bookselling!)
