Daughter cries all the time

Does anyone have an autistic teenage daughter that just cries all the time? Every single day? She is never happy always upset and crying, it’s extremely hard listening to it all day 🥲 (yes I know it’s hard for her but I am a person to and I think anyone would struggle with this)

Why is she crying?

AppleGardens · 21/07/2026 20:10

She is unable to say unfortunately

Mine's 11 and if the slightest thing goes wrong, she gets all upset and just breaks down. I assume its an autism response and I'm working on it by being gentle with her, explaining how it is perfectly valid to feel like crying but it might put people off.
Its a long process...

I’m so sorry @AppleGardensthat must be really hard.

Is it that she can’t explain how she feels or is she non-verbal?

AppleGardens · 21/07/2026 20:19

She can speak but it’s repeating things that have been said to her

I’m not sure what you can do. Have you spoken to her GP about the possibility of trying an SSRI and has she had an OT assessment?

Im just wondering if either of those two might help?

AppleGardens · 21/07/2026 21:23

GP doesnt help, not taking her to the GP as shes well physically and last time I took her for an issue I got told she was an attention seeker.

@AppleGardens I would post again in the SN Teen Section as hopefully you’ll get someone who knows what to do respond in there Flowers

RandomMess · 22/07/2026 07:10

How old is she, could it be linked to her menstrual cycle and possibly have PPMD?

likeitshard · 22/07/2026 07:36

Well she’s unhappy and it’s either her environment is upsetting her- school maybe ? Or it’s hormones Or it’s because she’s not coping with her autism.

You could look into therapy for her? Or find a better GP? Speak to school and see if there’s any issues there. Try to change her routine at home.

AppleGardens · 23/07/2026 18:30

Shes 15 she does seem unhappy all the time, shes crying again today but nothing has happened, can’t afford therapy as had to give up work due to her needs (she gets hrc dla doesn't sleep all night) it’s just relentless even my other children are picking up on the atmosphere and said shes never happy.

Shocking that the doctor said she was attention seeking OP, I can't get over how appalling that is - did you make a complaint? What an ignorant arsehole. You really need to see a different doctor.

If she's normally at school do you think she's struggling with the transition to it being holidays and her routine being completely messed up? How is she at school? Is she only able to communicate using echolalia or is it just she's so distressed that's all she can manage right now?

Is there anything that soothes her or helps calm her OP? Weighted blanket, sensory lights, cuddly toy, Is there anything she's into or really loves? Watching something on the tv/kindle over and over.

Does she sleep at all OP? Is her not sleeping causing this do you think? Have you tried Melatonin? I think you really need to get her help OP for all your sakes. She's obviously deeply distressed and it must be very distressing for all of you too,

QuaintBeaker · 23/07/2026 19:05

OP, do you think it might help if she had a way to communicate?
Have you looked into AAC devices? Or signing?

WallaceinAnderland · 23/07/2026 19:26

not taking her to the GP as shes well physically

But she could be in pain which could be the cause of her distress.

AppleGardens · 23/07/2026 19:47

She’s not, we seen the GP they said she’s fine and attention seeking as I didn’t mention. And no I didn’t complain and probably too late now. As soon as I mentioned she was autistic the GP didnt want to know, I mentioned it as the GP kept asking questions to her and she couldn’t answer

You really need to make a complaint about the GO, and then see a different doctor.
Don’t deny her medical attention that you think she may need because of one shit doctor.

Hugs, this sounds very hard. Many teenagers find it a difficult time, hormones all over the place and they have a huge impact on mental well being.

See a different GP* that should have said!! X

ChalkOutlines · 23/07/2026 19:52

Is this new or has it always been like this? Does she have a phone and social media? Do you know what she watches? Friendship issues?Academic issues? Relationships issues? What are the school saying? Any concerns? Is she crying at school? Can she be pulled out of it … with a treat, hug, etc? Do you allow her to just cry it out and feel? How is she afterwards?

FlyingToniBoxes · 23/07/2026 19:53

Is she at a special school?

Can you seek advice from her teachers? If it's a special school with an autism focus they might be able to direct you towards helpful resources. There will be a reason but really someone who knows her and her situation will be best placed to help or advise.
