Toddler severe anxiety on night time causing vomitting

Hiya, really am struggling with my toddler who is 2 years and 4 months he has always been an amazing sleeper and self settles. But out of the blue he will not go to sleep unless I am in the room if I am not there he will vomit and scream for me. I am in the room for 3 hours sometimes as he keeps an eye out to make sure I'm still there. I have introduced "mommy's blanket" but he still wants me in the room. I work full time and really need the night time for just some time for me. It creating tension between me and my partner. As it's a lot for me. He has.white noise on during his sleep. Would really love any advice or if anyone is going through anything similar would love to chat as I am finding it very difficult. Thank you xxx

Is your partner his father ?

CaffeinatedMum · 19/07/2026 22:06
  1. definitely stay in the room as long as he needs you, I know it’s tough but trying to leave won’t help, 2) could be be ready to drop his nap, 3) have you tried letting him sleep in your bed

I’ll be honest my daughter is a good sleep and sleeps right though and has done since she was 12weeks with the odd regression but I’d be very alarmed at that change. Is there an explainable change in his circumstances like just been sent to nursery? Again not to jump to conclusions but is he comfortable around your partner? Is that dad?

I'd cosleep. Not much you can do. I think the more you withdraw, the more he will scream for you. Give in, show him some love, and just accept going to bed early for a little while.

Your poor little one and poor you. It sounds like there is a lot going on for you both. Personally I believe in seeking professional help when you need it. We used an amazing sleep consultant. She’s a very warm caring person and not a “leave them to cry” type and she is also a child psychologist. She worked miracles with my little one just by tweaking our routine in a few different ways. If you want her details I can pass them on. One of the first things she would ask is what time they are going to bed and about their naps? A good starting point is often to make sure they are not overtired. She often recommends earlier bedtimes to people which isn’t the whole answer but often makes a big difference.

Thankyou for your kind words, yeah I would like her details if possible please. He goes to bed around 8- 8.30 used to be 7pm but just naturally we extended this as he didn't seem tired enough.

Why is it causing tension between you?
Is he as concerned as you are?

Janefx40 · 20/07/2026 23:12

How are things tonight @Loftyplayer? I have sent you a DM with the website of the consultant I mentioned. Hope you’re doing ok x

My little one never seemed over tired but the earlier bedtime did make a big difference - it wasn’t the whole story as we did that a couple of months before sleep training and it didn’t cure the issue but he immediately started sleeping for longer stretches when we moved his bedtime earlier. So it was part of the solution.

concertinacornflake · 20/07/2026 23:20

He needs you, so stay in the room.

Why is it causing tension with your partner? This is not a caring response.
