Car insurance help.
I need to get my son car insurance, whats the cheapest way, me or my partner dont drive. I was going to ask my mum to be named driver. I know its legal etc, but Ive never insured a car before and want to do it right ( and cheap) . He passed last month
Has anyone else had a grand parent on a policy. Many thanks for any help

You can add her as a named driver and it probably will reduce the premium but not as main driver. He will probably have a black box and it will cost a fortune for the first year. Mine is paying £200 a month

He needs a policy under his own name if he is the main driver. There are ways to reduce costs by accepting a high excess and a black box but it will not be cheap. My son is 18 and passed his test 4 months ago. He has his own policy, I am a named driver which reduced the premium by £200 per year. No escaping from the fact it’s still bloody expensive tho!

No one can tell you what is the cheapest policy - it will entirely depend on where you live and what car it is. Use a comparison site.

It will also depend on whether you get a black box or not, NB having a black box can be a complete pain if the car is used by others and the restrictions are not uniform across providers so read the small print.

You can have the grandparent as named driver but unless she lives with you how are you going to manage if for whatever reason you or other parent or sibling needs to drive the car from time to time?

Nonsense, as long as he is named as the main driver its perfectly legal to put anyone you like on a named driver, and it does usually help a bit with the premiums.

Yes sorry I misread. He would have be listed as main driver. Car insurance fronting is a form of insurance fraud where a more experienced driver (often a parent) falsely claims to be the main driver of a vehicle to lower premiums, when a younger or higher-risk driver (like a teenager) uses the car most.

This is not the same thing as being the named driver as quoted in the OP and other posts.

Like others, DS had his own policy and I am on as a named driver. He had a black box for 2 years, with Hastings (a YouDrive policy) and I didn't have to activate the app for the black box when I drove :)

The policy must list him as the main driver but he can add a grandparent to the policy if he wants, whether this helps may be down to their age

I’m on my DD’s still, saves £300 a year but I’m the best age for this, my parents would cost more not less
