Final week of Yr 6 overwhelming

Is anyone else’s Yr 6 child finding the last week really hard ? It’s the final week of primary school and my DS (suspected autism, waiting for his panel decision for diagnosis) is finding it all stressful and overwhelming, he’s not sad to be leaving, he just seems over it. It was his last sports day today and he didn’t take part. He dosent want to do his final play. They have at least two events of some sort every day which most kids are really enjoying but he’s just finding it stressful. I’m feeling so sad and upset about it all. I want him to join in and have fun but not sure what I can do to support. I always try to encourage him to give everything a go even when it’s hard but equally want him to be happy. Add in a fresh batch of teenage hormones and a new passion for his hair/how he looks and everything has to be just right and mornings are very stressful. Just realised there’s no actual clear point here just a little vent 😭

I’m letting mine have tomorrow off. He’s Autistic and it’s all just too much. He’s not enjoying it, quite the opposite.

We are a year away from it but I can see it being overwhelming next year. It all seems so overblown with so many different activities and ways they mark it.

We had a disco sometime in the last few weeks and did shirt signing on the last day. Job done. I would have been very much done with all the fuss well before the end of term if we'd had all the stuff they do now.

This is reassuring we are not the only ones. I hope you both have a good breather from it all tomorrow

We have two leavers services, two leavers parties, a musical, a play, a sports day, a cathedral trip, a summer fair, culture day, rainbow raffle day, none school day 😭 Although to be fair everyone seems to have abandoned uniform at this point anyway .For a child who likes to know what is happening it’s just not as fun as I think the school thinks it is !

This is far too much!

Definitely give them a day off if overwhelmed.

It’s ridiculous - don’t force him to conform. Give him the break he needs. It’s all OTT BS.

I had two in consecutive Y6, one ND one NT, and it was too much for both of them. I swear, for the last 3/4 of the summer term they did literally nothing but rehearse their Leavers’ production, which neither of my children were really into. They both hated the lack of structure and routine, and so much was made of the fact that they were Leaving, and these were their Last Days with their Friends. It was mawkish and overdone and we were all relieved when it was over.

Year 6 is all about SATs, once they've done those there's no benefit to the school of doing any regular lessons.

Mine didn’t do SATs, so this isn’t relevant

Our entire primary school is increasingly like this. My DD is finishing Y4 and it’s been constant non uniform days, full school photos, fancy dress school anniversary day, sports day, fun day, school play, trip, choir/ orchestra performances, themed days for subjects. Bun sales. Bring in a t shirt to be customised. Just for a normal year group not even year 6 leavers. There have been 8 emails home about different events some days. Too much for parents let alone kids.

As a year 6 teacher, they dont stop wirking after SATs. The main goal is to prepare them for secondary school andvthat carries on in one firm ir another until the bitter end.
