How can i get my 6 yr old to wipe his bum.

He just will not even try.

Maybe i should have encouraged him a lot earlier but now its becoming a problem.

Any advice welcome.

Well, I have 2 dds, and dd1 wouldn't do it herself till she was 71/2. So not necessarily a 'boy' thing. I think it was convenient and she new she'd get a proper job done! However, dd2 has been doing it competently since nursery.

The solution came when I started an evening course. She had to do it herself (wouldn't ask H) and found out she could do it.

I kind of miss it. >>>

I eventually forced dd1 (yes, my PFB!) to do it herself when she was 7. Can still clearly remember the shouts of 'fiiiiiiniiiiiished!!!!!'...

MBS - lol - it has crossed my mind to worry about that - shades of 'bitty'

QOD · 26/06/2008 16:10

my dd is 10 in December. One of her presents is that she will wipe her own damn butt.
Honestly.
She shouts FINISHED and will just sit there, for an hour if one of us doesnt go

Since she goes at bedtime and/or just as we leave for school we just do it...........
sigh

Buda · 26/06/2008 16:19

OMG - 10!!!! No way. No how. I am not still wiping at 10!

QOD · 26/06/2008 16:35

yeah, I said that too.......... she's still 9 though....

I don't wipe ds's for him (8 y.o.), but neither does he wipe his own, at least not often. When he does it's really just a token effort, and his pants have skiddies every day.

I don't know why, he just doesn't want to. I'm afraid I have stopped worying too much about it, ensure he is bathed or showered frequently, and assuming he will eventually start doing the job himself.

Very occasionally he complains about a sore bottom, and I point out that it wouldn't happen if he wiped.

Just a boy thing I thing (with the odd tomboy in there as well).

citronella · 27/06/2008 16:37

Thank God!! It's not just mine (5.9) then.

confusedmamma · 27/06/2008 22:25

Thank God I'm not alone. My 6 year old son won't do it either. My friend's son texted her from the toilet the other day to come and wipe his bum. He's 8. Bonkers or what!!

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 27/06/2008 22:59

My dd is 7 and I still wipe her bum most times. She is getting better and does it herself maybe 30% of the time now.

clumsymum · 28/06/2008 13:36

confusedmamma So he can't wipe his own bum, but he has a mobile phone ??? Der ....

Next time ds asks me when he can have a mobile, I'll tell him "when you can wipe your own bottom".

But then I can't see why any pre-teen kid has a mobile anyway

henriettam · 22/02/2012 18:37

This is a brilliant idea. My ds is so hit and miss. Today collected from school and not sure he even bothered to go to the toilet. So embarrassing. He stank :(

FannyFifer · 22/02/2012 18:46

Thank god, fellow arse wipers.
DS will be 7 in April, he shouts finished and won't move from throne till his arse is wiped.
I do try and get him to wipe it but it ends up all up his back and toilet seat etc so then I end up doing it.
He would NEVER poo at school, comes home and does his "half 3 poo" as it's known.

smongesmonge · 22/02/2012 20:55

Ds is 5 and I wipe his bum some of the time. DH is more strict and ds has to wipe it first, then dh says he'll check it and finish up.

boglach · 23/02/2012 10:34

"mummy, daddy I've finished my poo!"

My ds is nearly six and no sign of being able to wipe himself. He won't go at school either. I am very reassured by this thread

My ds favourite times are 6.40 am, or just when I am sitting down to eat

BlueEyeshadow · 23/02/2012 18:34

This thread makes me feel tons better about DS1 (5.1)! We forceencourage him to do one or two practice wipes and then check, like smonngesmonge's DH.
