Has anyone caught HFM off their dc?

Hi all,

Ds2 came down with HFM on Monday, ds1 came out in the blisters yesterday.

Ds1 has had it before as a baby and it doesn’t seem too bad for him. Ds2 has been waking hourly for 6 days on a night, he’s also due his tonsillectomy in just over a week 😣

I’ve been feeling achy the last few days but put it down to the lack of sleep. Also had a mouth ulcer for a few days but often get them when I’m run down.

I woke up today with a few spots on my foot and now they’re all up my arms and legs, scalp and I have multiple spots and ulcers in my mouth mostly under my tongue. 😫 Also my skin has been flaking on my face.

Has anyone experienced catching it as an adult and how long did it last?! I feel horrendous and know I’ll be in for another bout of sleepless nights in a week after ds2 tonsillectomy (I’m a lone parent).

Any remedies or experience greatly appreciated!

Yes, I've had it twice. First time was the worst, mainly for the flu like symptoms. Over in about 72h.

Just be aware they you or DCs might lose finger or toe nails - I didn't but my friend lost two toe nails 😬

CrikeyMajikey · 05/07/2026 19:54

Yes, I caught it from DS when he was 2. I was rough for 48 hours and has blood blister like spots on my hands.

BigWig78 · 05/07/2026 19:54

My sister did off DS1 and she’s a primary teacher lol
She was sort of flu ey and iirc it was 2/3 days and a few more off her work.
I’ve never caught it off any of mine.

Thanks all for your replies!

I’m hoping it will pass soon. I don’t have any one my hands but they feel very achy and tingling, my arms and legs are covered.😖I have a lot more blisters than either ds have had.

Just hoping it passes within the next few days!

Yep, worst illness of my life. DS (9 months) ended up in hospital with it and just as we came home, i started feeling horrible. Truly, all in all, one of the most traumatic events of my parenting years. I ached, my feet hurt and burnt at the same time, I had a really high fever, walking felt so so painful, like walking on hot nails, I ate custard for 3 days.

3 other kids at this playgroup ended up in hospital too so it must have been a very bad strain.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 05/07/2026 23:10

Yep! Both DP and I caught it and had it worse than DD.

My mouth felt like I’d been eating nettles, some of my finger nails flaked off and I lost some toe nails too.

I was exhausted and achey.

DP got a rash on the side of his foot and DD had a spot in her nappy area that the doc confirmed HFM despite no other symptoms.

Wasywasydoodah · 05/07/2026 23:15

Yes, my tongue swelled up and i felt terrible. But I got better and it only lasted a few days. It was Christmas so that was bad

MotherOfCrocodiles · 05/07/2026 23:51

Yes, itchiest feet I’ve ever had and so gross. Didn’t get any on my face though.

hugasaurus · 05/07/2026 23:56

Me! I was so ill. My entire mouth was filled with ulcers (DD1 only had a couple of blisters, DH got nothing). My mum said at that she never remembered me having it as a child whereas DH was one of three and was sure he had, so not sure if having zero immunity is what made it so bad for me. It was awful, I could barely eat, drink or talk and it was over Christmas! I had to use a text to speech app to communicate with DH. The inside of my mouth looked like a science experiment.

Good news is that when DD2 got it, none of us caught it.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 06/07/2026 00:00

My ex caught a Spotty face off my son when he had it. I got a mouth ulcer that was it.

notthatoldchestnut · 06/07/2026 00:05

Yes I had it - caught it whilst pregnant off my 1 yr old and I felt rotten!

sorry for you OP - I found it lasted 2/3 days and then I was ok but man I felt like shit.

all the best

I caught it from my grandson. I thought chicken pox at 35 was bad but HFM at 72 was horrendous. The gp described it as a mild virus in children and a painful illness in adults. Apart from the fatigue and flu like aches, my hands and feet swelled and burned. I couldn’t sleep two nights with the under skin itchy burning. I got huge sores on my feet and hands. One sore lasted three months. Eventually huge areas of skin fell off-flake doesn’t describe how much came off. You have my sympathy.

SayDoWhatNow · 06/07/2026 06:46

Yes! It was awful.

DS had breathing issues and nearly ended up in hospital. Was barely feeding. Had horrific nappy rash.

I got it a few days later and had a really bad fever. Then got the blisters all over my throat. Also (sorry for the tmi but just to warn you) on my labia. It was grim.

OTOH, we got it again about a year later and it was almost nothing. Barely noticeable apart from a few spots.

noramoo · 07/07/2026 11:33

Yes! So grim! We and DH had it worse than DD, I have never had a sore throat like it. 2-3 days of hell followed by another 4-5 of feeling a bit rough...

SJM1988 · 07/07/2026 11:34

Yes I only got the mouth part but it was 100x worse than that my DCs had.

clarrylove · 07/07/2026 11:50

Yes, my H caught it off my son. IIRC it affects males more than females.

Beeloux · 07/07/2026 16:26

Thanks all! Feel a bit better now. Mouth still hurts a lot and feet and hands ache. Also have one down below too. 😷 picked it thinking it was an ingrown hair which was a bad idea!

On the plus side, ds2 seems much better with it now so at least I’m getting a decent nights sleep. 😊

Yes I felt awful for about 10 days started as a sore throat and general ache/flu like feeling then turned to spots on backs of my hands and in my mouth. On the soles of my feet and palms I had a sore tingly feeling and had tiny spots (viral rash) all up my arms. Where I have previously had eczema in the past the skin went all raw and scabby too.

was awful and the blisters were huge and itchy! But no one else in my family (apart from DD as she gave it to me) got it! Hope it passes quickly for you
