How often do you see your MIL / FIL? And do you work full time / part time / not at all?

genuinely curious - that’s all :)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

FIL still works but only 18 hours a week. MIL recently retired. We see them both probably once a month, sometimes more, sometimes less. I have two young children under 5. Currently on mat. Leave but will be going back to work 30 hours a week over 4 days. I previously worked full time before second child. DH still works full time (shift work).

What about on your side? @Petuniapet

My dad - every couple of months.

ILs - DC1 sees them every couple of months. DC2 sees them only at Christmas as he isn't really on speaking terms with them. Both DC are teens, both home ed, I'm at home full time while DH works.

We see DS2, DDIL & DGS every 6 weeks. They live 3 hours away from us. We know they see her parents a lot more often, her mum does the childcare. They often say they wish we’d move nearer, we wish that too but it’s not possible just atm.

Easter, birthdays, Christmas and always because I arrange it.
MIL is always moaning that she’d like to see my stepdaughter more but does absolutely nothing about it. I’ve told her to arrange meetups herself, things like having dinner at hers or going for a Toby carvery (she practically lives next door to one) but she never does.
Step daughter is 17, me and DH work full time, MIL is retired, FIL isn’t with us anymore.

I see my mum once a week or more. We are very close and she helps with childcare on a regular basis - FIL and MIL have asked not to be used for childcare. My dad went see about once a month, sometimes more.

mindutopia · 05/07/2026 15:37

We see MIL about every other month. She lives about an hour from us. Dh’s dad is long dead, so it’s just MIL.

I currently don’t work (due to illness, not because it’s a lifestyle choice), but have previously worked PT and FT. Though I can’t see why it would make a difference as I don’t ever make any plans with MIL myself. Dh organises everything. My days are are my time, not for hanging out with Dh’s family. In fact, when Dh meets up with her, I only go about half the time. He doesn’t need me to supervise and happily takes the dc out on days out himself.

I’m NC with my family so we don’t see them at all.

Cornishmumofone · 05/07/2026 15:38

Maybe 4 times a year. They live 45 minutes away but as they’ve had their daughter and her two children living with them for 20 years they don’t care much about DD9.

bananaapplepears · 05/07/2026 16:18

I was confused by the title. I thought you meant the grandparents of inlaws as in my MIL's grandparents (who are long dead). Do you just mean how often do you see the inlaws?

Itscominghometoscotland · 05/07/2026 16:19

Why?

aren’t they just grandparents? Why call them in law grandparents? Surely they’re as much grandparents as the other side?

FckThisShit · 05/07/2026 16:20

Basically never and FIL picks dh up for work and drops him back off every day (family business) but he never comes in or shows any real interest other than waving from the van, it's quite bizarre but hey ho.

HappyMuma · 05/07/2026 16:47

At least once each week, the children more because they sometimes pop in to see them after school.

We both work full time.

BendingSpoons · 05/07/2026 16:50

About every 6 weeks. We visit them for a weekend. They haven't travelled to ours for 7 years.

We see my parents more. They live closer, but they also visit us and help out with babysitting etc when we ask.

MotherofDogs3 · 05/07/2026 16:52

We see my MIL most sunday evenings for couple hours. FIL my husband is no contact anymore so never! My parents live 3 hours away but we see them every couple of months. They either come to us or vice versa. My husband is self employed and works full time and I work part time when my kids at school. None of the grandparents are retired yet.

NickMarlow · 05/07/2026 16:54

PILs live over 100 miles away. We stay every New Year and at some point every summer, usually another long weekend too. They come to us for the day a few times a year.

My DPs are same distance opposite direction. We see them a bit more often - we do similar with them as with my in-laws, but I only work term time and take the kids to theirs a couple of times a year in school holidays on top of when we all go.

SmellyNelliey · 05/07/2026 20:48

We have seen FIL 3 times in 12 months!
He dont make the effort, its always us and we have 4 children and a baby he lives 1 hour away,we moved 6 months away and he isnt even intrested in where we live. Unfortunately MIL passed when DH was 2.
My parents we see about twice a month we visit them and they visit us they live 2 hours away but video call everyday and if somebody's ill or they might be needed even for the smallest of things they would he here in a flash.(They both work full time too)
