Baby gate help

Hello,
I am looking for some help with installing a baby gate.
Our stairs start before the wall resulting in there being a drop if I was to install the gate flush with the wall. (See picture)

Does anybody have any ideas or experience with a similar situation.

We rented a place when our eldest was little with a non-standard staircase - we put the stair gate on his bedroom and then at the bottom of the stairs we had one custom made by a joiner but it was expensive so didn’t bother at the top as we knew he wouldn’t be on his own upstairs ever he only slept up there!

We have similar stairs and had to install it on our children’s bedroom doors instead, even with extensions & supposedly specific brackets, a stair gate at the top of the stairs wasn’t an option.

Only alternative is welding some kind of plate onto the bottom of the gate so it would block that first step, it is an option I considered but practical wise it would be a nightmare and even more of a hazard
