DS - 2yo- doesn't want to poo......

DS aged 2 seems to be having 'problems' pooing at the moment. DH thinks he's constipated and is straining, MIL says his bottoms sore and thats why he won't go, but I think he's trying NOT to poo. Almost like he's just realised what he's doing and is more aware. He's only had one proper poo in about 3 days where he used to go at least once or twice a day.
He seems to be almost clenching his bum rather than trying to push out (IYKWIM)
Anyone else come across this? Any advice?
