Prom for primary school children - what is it?

I know about proms but thought they were for older teenage children. What is a prom in the context of a primary school aged child?

What age do they have them, what do they wear and is it like a school disco? Only someone has asked me if I have a prom dress for an 8 year old and I'm not quite sure what they mean.

If anyone can enlighten me I would be grateful - we only have the Valentines disco at DD's school and that is very much a jeans and sparkly T-shirt type of affair.

A lot of primaries have proms now. It's all so Americanised. A very pretty dress is really what it means. Sort of cocktail-ish, not floor length, and obviously age appropriate. A party dress.
