Hi my 4 year old who starts school in September has never been to preschool! I have tried a few times but he never got on and I never liked them! He is very social and we go to lots of groups ect. Has anyone never sent their child and did they settle ok at school? Also did the school contact you about visiting ect I'm worried because he hasn't been to any preschools he will miss out on visiting the school before he starts as know preschools often do this.
Will I have a chance to speak to the school/teacher about this

Yes but I’m not talking about reciting numbers. I said counting items - that’s different. Lots of parents start with this type of maths. Knowing shapes etc. We aren’t all daft.

I know many parents do this (thankfully!) but sometimes I find parents aren’t doing the less obvious things and some of my most able children are often the ones who fall apart the minute they have do something they don’t want to.

My DD didn’t attend pre school and started school at four (was born end of July so only just four) but she was very confident. The school had sessions throughout the end of the summer term where she could attend for an hour, get used to the classroom and other children. This was great for her but a lot of the other children couldn’t attend as they were at nursery/parents working. The school also did a home visit. My daughter settled really well, she is now coming to end of year one and the only feedback I had was in reception parents evening where I was told how quickly she had become independent ie putting on her coat, shoes herself as I had not considered this and been doing it all for her at home! So the only thing I would say is try and prepare them to be independent in this way. I also appreciate I was fortunate to not require nursery for her as I was already at home caring for a disabled child so not working.

My daughter was the same. We put her in to preschool after the Easter, for summer term, 3 days a week. She still struggled when it came to school in September, even with being very social and going to lots of groups etc. Even now she sometimes has a wobble in the morning at drop off.

Fine. If you both enjoy it crack on but it's not on my list of things children need to be able to do before starting school.

my dd is the same op although i don’t plan to enroll her in september.

could you look into home ed social groups in the meantime? you may find they offer some sort of structured sit-down school-type activities that he can join once a week or so.
