Sore throat causing 11m old to vomit?

Hi I’m wonder in if anyone can advise? We’ve had a nightmare 24hrs with our 11m old. He woke crying at 3:30am and my husband went to check on him. He’d been sick some clear mucus, so I brought him in bed with me and my husband went and slept in the spare room. Every 10-20 mins he was wretching and then would bring up mucus. He was really distressed when this happened but would go back to sleep for another 10 mins then would happen again.

Around 45 mins after it started, the mucus turned mustard yellow so I was quite worried and called 111 who told me I’d get a call from an out of hours doctor and I didn’t.

Around 30 mins after calling 111 his vomit turned red and smelt of blood so we decided to go to A&E. He was sick around 10-15 times in total over the course of around 3-4 hours but it was always tiny amounts and didn’t smell of vomit.

He was given anti sickness meds around 7:00 which stopped the wretching/vomiting and then he perked up and went back to being his usual self. He hasn’t been sick since then (it’s now 15:30).

The nurse said she suspected a stomach bug, but we were then sent to the urgent out of hours GP and she checked him over and said she doesn’t think it’s a stomach bug as the vomit seems surface level, he hasn’t got any other symptoms like a fever/diarehha. She said she thinks it’s a sore throat and that the sore throat/phlegm is causing him to wretch and that’s irritated his throat and made him have blood in his sick etc.

Anyway, the rest of the day he hasn’t eaten much or had much milk he seems off his food and tired/needy. He’s been playing with toys a bit and had 1 small bottle, a kiwi and half a slice of toast, but that’s all.

Has anyone else gone through this with a baby with a sore throat vomiting? And does anyone have any tips? Or do you think it’s something else?

Thank you! From one anxious and tired mama

Could be strep throat, it can cause vomiting especially at night. They should be able to confirm with a swab x
