Suitable magazine for a 5 yr old girl?

My daughter is coming to the end of a subscription to Cbeebies mag which she has totally outgrown. Want something with activities and plenty to do / read. She is quite a girly girl liking pink & princesses etc, also likes animals. What do your girls enjoy reading. Don't want too much advertising and to be age appropriate (not too much talk of make-up etc). Appreciate your advice.

My dd is younger but she and I (and her brother who is 6) really like the Charlie and lola magazine. Lots to do but we have only bought 2 issues. I imagine after a bit we will yearn for more variety!!

scatterbrain · 18/06/2008 21:33

My dd (7.5) loved the Angeline Ballerina mags - she has kept them all and goes through them all all the time - we had them on subscription - I think there is a website - I could look for it if you were interested?

I loathe all the pseudo teenie mags for little girls - mil bought her one the other day and it was talking about boyfriends and flirting fgs !

Thanks Yurt. Charlie & Lola is one of the few programmes on Cbeebies she will still watch so the mag would prob be good. Think have bought before and it had lots of crafty things in.

Scatterbrain - the teenie influence is what i really want to avoid (Yuk) but want to maintain her interest too. She is doing ballet at the mo so would prob like Angelina. Will have a look for that. Thanks.

I second that - the Charlie and Lola mag is great for that age group. The 'free' gifts are actualy useful arts and crafts stuff and the whole magazine looks gorgeous in that Lauren Child style.

mummymusings · 18/06/2008 21:36

my dd is 3 and older dsd is 6 and they like Princess magazine, Sparkle Magazine, Girl Talk magazine -i think its called, has lots of pink and fluffy animals in it and hannah sodding montana etc magazines are the bane of my life!

Piffle · 18/06/2008 21:36

dd is 5.5 and really likes the Charlie and lola one but she is C&L mad. Tons of crafty stuff which lasts for ages!

Smithagain · 18/06/2008 21:37

Yep - Charlie and Lola

DD1 also has a membership of the RSPB junior branch - Wildlife Explorers - which comes with a great magazine. But it's only every two months.

Sparkle World is good.

Characters to appeal to five year old girls, like Angelina Ballerina, Rainbow Fairies, My Little Pony. BUT each issue there is a pull-out work book with sticker rewards- writing, mazes, numbers etc. Oh, and the obligatory plastic crap free gift on the front.

mellyonion · 18/06/2008 21:39

my 4 1/2 yo loves sparkle magazine..its nice and "little girly" as opposed to little lady ish....

ilovecake · 18/06/2008 21:43

Thanks everyone for the response - will have a look at all those in the shop tomorrow. Nice to know that other out there just want innocent intelligent reading / activities for their children too.

Animals and You is good, my DD loves it.

serin · 18/06/2008 23:18

LOL I came on MN tonight to ask what was a suitable mag for a 10 yr old girl!!!

DD has sadly outgrown National Geographic kids and she is sooo not ready for tales of anorexia/boyfriends six pack yet!!

Get NG kids ilovecake, you might have to read it to her but my six year old loves it.

ilovecake · 18/06/2008 23:26

Thanks Serin. Have seen NG kids - looks good. Can't offer advice on whats out there for 10 year olds though. Good luck with that.

Agree with Castille, my five year old DD loves Animals and You. DD2 (8) gets NG kids and DD1 (10) has Aquila.
