Reassurance on toddler behaviour please

Is this normal behaviour?

My son has always been an absolute angel (of course we've had many challenges and multiple tantrums etc but overall he's been an easy child)
People always commented on how well behaved and easy going he is.
But about 2 weeks before turning 2, he's completely changed. He's whining from the moment he gets up, tantrums over absolutely everything, he's reached the independence phase where he wants to do everything himself, he's always loved bath time and story time but recently we're having huge screaming fits at bedtime and can hardly make it through bath time.
He seems very tired, needing a long nap and early bedtime. I imagine he's going through a big developmental leap but this has been going on for a good few weeks now.
I'm mentally and physically exhausted, I'm trying to be firm and maintain boundaries but this is killing me. I was really enjoying his company and couldn't wait for days off with him, but now I just look forward to childcare days. And I hate that 😔
I don't know where my sweet little boy has gone. I'm trying to be realistic in thinking this is probably all a normal part of toddlerhood, but can someone reassure me that it gets better? 🙏🏼
Can a tantruming, unhappy toddler turn back into a happy easy going child?...
He used to be so happy, but now everything is a challenge and nothing is really enjoyable anymore...
Any advice would be hugely appreciated ❤️

It sounds like normal behaviour, but my goodness is it tiring! I'm going through the same with my 2yo and the end of it seems so far away! It does end though. You have my full sympathy!

Bear in mind that as well as a big growth spurt and language and social leap, there's a good chance he's got big molars moving around and coming through. Having had a wisdom tooth come through very late I have the utmost sympathy for teething toddlers.
He'll settle again. Just let him have the long naps and early bedtimes if he needs them. Best of luck!
