Toddler wants to make friends

My 3.5 year old asked me today ‘how do you make friends?’
His speech isn’t very clear. Vocab is fine but pronunciation not great. He goes to a nursery setting a couple of days a week. He is quite quiet and doesn’t chat much to peers from that I have seen. He finds nursery hard I think and seems to be happier at home or in a one on one play date.
I am not a super sociable person but I have a few friends. I’m quite quiet myself.
How would you respond?

Firstly, most three year olds are only just starting to form friendships - most play near each other rather than with each other up until this age. Secondly, I would continue to arrange playdates with kids he knows so he gets that one to one interaction which is a lot easier. And for his question, at this age I'd just say by being you! You're kind, and funny, and I love you so much. If he wants more information after that you can say that he could ask if a friend wanted to play cars? Or another game that he enjoys?
