Nine month old wants constant attention and cries unless held

Second time mum - have a 9m old and 3.5 yo.

my 9 month old is draining me. Was a pretty happy soul till 7 months and now a blooming terror. Constantly crying moaning or screeching at me unless actively being held or 24/7 on the floor engagement, which I can’t do.
he can't crawl yet, is close and gets ample floor time but I know it frustrates him but I can’t make him crawl! I would love it if he did it!
he used to be ok going with me room to room whilst I pottered and done chores but now I need to be ms Rachel 24/7!
helppppppp

Do you talk at him when you are trying to potter around ? Or sing loudly if he’s being loud

Yes I constantly chatter when pottering and have him beside me but it’s not enough now.

my 18 month old was a very, very clingy baby just like this until he could walk. I found it easiest to just have him on me in a carrier most of the day so he got the closeness he wanted and i could still get things done. It is so hard, so I do really sympathise with you, but I promise it will pass x

My 10 month old is exactly the same! I am just waiting it out. I also have a 3 year old and 5 year old who can sometimes entertain him while I quickly pop to the loo

Empathy! Been there! My ds basically grizzled and cried until he could walk. And he never actually crawled, he couldn’t get the hang of it. Finally at 13 months he got up on his feet - and suddenly he turned into a happy chap!

Imjustagirl222 · 25/03/2026 09:26

Yeah my first was a very very high needs clingy baby, and was since birth so I didn’t really notice a change at 9mos 🤣 he crawled at 10mos and then walked 3 weeks later which did make things better tho.
my second baby has been much more chill since birth so now with the 2 of them my brain is like 🤯🤯🤯 the screeching goes right through me!

Was he sick in the last while? Lingering ear infection or something can make them really miserable.

9 months is the classic time for them realizing that they are separate from you and that you can go away and it freaks them out. I would suggest you get a sling or carrier and just wear him until this phase goes.
