2 YO with glue ear and speech delay - pay for grommets privately?

My DS is 2y2m, he has had recurring ear infections for the past 12 months and is also speech delayed as he can’t hear properly due to glue ear.
We’ve seen a private ENT who has recommended grommets. The NHS waiting list is over 12 months, and privately they cost c £3.5k.
WWYD, pay privately (we can afford to take it out of savings) wait for NHS, or see if he improves with the summer? His understanding is good, his communication is very poor though and he gets very frustrated about this which affects his behaviour at home and nursery. Nursery have referred him to SALT but there is a long waiting list for that too, and I expect they will ask about his hearing which is poor when we finally get an appointment.
