2 mile walk per day too far for a 5-yr-old?

Potentially a bit of a pfb question I'm afraid ....

From September dd (who will then be 5 yrs) will be attending a school 1 mile away (1.7 km. Is 2 miles a day (split between morning and afternoon of course) too far for her to walk on a daily basis?

I don't think so - I think it will be good for her - but a friend of mine thinks it's a bit much. I'd be grateful to know what others think?

I live about a mile from school. My 3 yr old walks to take my other 3 (11,8 and 5) to school and walks home/to pre-school. Then normally walks it again to pick them all up.
So no it isn't too much on a daily basis.

Not too far no. You can always let them scoot...

Not at all. But, as LD says, scooting is a good option.

not too far at all.

but do get a scooter, makes life a bit easier.

and you can scooter home on it

infact, would be a bit if kids weren't doing that anyway

Not too far at all. my dd did the same when we moved house and we were about 2km from school. She was rising 5.

Amphibimum · 16/06/2008 18:44

oh i wish we could walk to school [covets a house somewhere with pavements]

Great! Thanks very much for all the speedy replies. Much appreciated.

Will consider the scooter option too although route has lots of steep hills!

We do it and have done since DD1 was four. She's been fine and it's a good time for talking.

BTW - scooters make it more fun but not necessarily faster if there are hills. In my experience anyway. DD1 is slower on her scooter than on foot

thisisyesterday · 16/06/2008 22:35

not too much at all.
my 3 yr old manages a 30 min walk into town, and back

suwoo · 16/06/2008 22:36

My DD scoots, but I am sure she's more knackered when we get there than if we walked.

quickdrawmcgraw · 16/06/2008 22:39

ds is 5 and walks 2-3 miles a day. not too far but I also have a bike or scooter for him if it's raining and we need to get home quick

Countingthegreyhairs · 17/06/2008 12:32

Thanks for all the advice everyone - much appreciated - we are definitely going to walk. It will do us both good.

Dd's usually quite tired/wound-up after school and it might be just the thing to calm her down a bit.

Starting to look for large rain capes on-line now ...
