7 day old not pooing and making weird grunting noises

he’s 7 days old today and hasn’t done a poo since about 8am yesterday morning. he’s formula fed. is that normal or not? google is saying different things

he’s usually really calm like honestly such a chilled baby this week but since this afternoon he keeps grunting and making these weird little straining noises that he hasn’t done before. not crying loads just like uncomfortable and pushing

we’ve tried rubbing his tummy gently and it’s not really doing anything. we tried bicycle legs but that actually made him cry so we stopped because i felt bad

he is still feeding. had bottles as normal today. we changed his formula a couple of days ago because i realised i’d accidentally fed him the recalled cow&gate batch when he was 4 or 5 days old. i changed it straight away and he’s been fine since then. he did poo normally after that though so i don’t know if this is related or just because of the new formula

his tummy doesn’t look massive but it feels a bit firmer than before? or maybe i’m imagining it because i’m stressing

he’s still having wet nappies

is nearly 2 days without a poo bad at this age? should i ring someone or wait it out

i feel like every little thing is something serious and i’m constantly on edge

he’s just laid here now making little ehh ehh noises and going red in the face and i don’t know if that’s normal newborn stuff or if he’s actually in pain

anyone else’s baby not poo for this long at a week old?

i don’t want to ignore something important but i also don’t want to be dramatic again

please tell me if this sounds normal or not

Completely normal. No need to worry at all.

All sounds very normal.

It’s definitely worth calling the health visitor or gp they will be able to give you advice, I’m not a medical professional but when mine were tiny, the advice was to offer cooled boiled water in between bottle feeds, also when changing the nappy if you raise his knees to his tummy it can stimulate a bowel movement.

Try a warm bath? We found the aptimal comfort food good..it eased her wind problems … is there a comfort version of your formula? Ring 111 if you’re worried

@MayBee10he’s not in pain of he’s grunting and going red in the face. That fairly typical newborn behaviour whilst they get used to having to poo Smile

If he was in pain he would be crying or screaming.

How are things this morning? Has he pooed again yet?
