Washable nappies

My dd has just told us she’s pregnant- all very exciting!

She has been thinking through a lot of things including the way we dealt with babies, and is interested in cloth nappies (which we used for all 3 of our children. We have offered to buy them but I can’t find any of the products we used (it was 26 years ago we bought our first one and we passed them on when the dc were all potty trained).

so, what are the top brands these days? Who makes the most absorbent, the most fun designs. We used pocket nappies which we loved, is there anyplace you would recommend to buy them?

thanks a lot!

If you go to the Nappy Lady website, there is a questionnaire you (or DD) can fill in to get tailored advice on what nappies might work best for your DD's family.

We had a two part nappy system with separate fitted nappy and waterproof wrap, rather than pocket nappies. For DC1, we used totsbots bamboozle, which were good (and had nice designs) but we found that they didn't quite do birth to potty even though DC1 wasn't huge and we didn't potty train late, he still outgrew them and we had to get the bigger size. For DC2, we were still using them but then we were given a set of Motherease One Size nappies and they seemed to fit him much better (different shaped baby) and last better because poppers not velcro. Would definitely recommend those if planning lots of children - our set has been through two babies and is pretty much as good as new to pass on to another family. The nappies themselves are pretty plain and boring, but the outer wraps have nice designs.

Greencheeks and little lambs were some of my favourites..I liked pocket nappies in the day and old school Terry's at night 🙂
There are a lot of nappy groups on FB and Insta who give great advice

Thanks, I will have a look at all these sites! TBH I’m still getting my head round the fact I’m going to be a Gran!!

We’ve tried 3 different brands, this might be individual, but my experience:

Tot Bots - too bulky, and the Velcro was too stiff, constant red spots where it dig in her tummy :(

Little lamb - good fit but leak from time to time, and even though I never tumble dry them, the inside got full of piling and I hate it - I now put the bamboo inserts over instead of inside the pocket because of that

motherease duo - my favorite, the overnight one has never leaked and the day ones do not leak either, so far seem like better material and quality.

All of them leak if she’s in a carrier though, not sure why.

They are expensive so getting it “wrong” is not great, and I feel like the little lamb and tot bots were wasted money, in hindsight I would have probably tried to get a bundle of one per type/brand to test before committing. Or if she doesn’t mind, get them second hand (I didn’t feel comfortable with it but lots of people do).
