Toileting regression

My son has just started at a new nursery and has started having poo accidents after being toilet trained for around 6m+. He says he is scared of the toilets, doesnt like children watching, is scared to fall down them, and holds the poo so long it just comes out. He also says "i only do my poos at home."
We were asked to pick him up early one day last week, as he had three poo accidents.

I sternly told him off today, which i know isnt helpful. I was just annoyed at cleaning him/his pants/anywhere that got poo from his accident. I feel terrible. He screamed and cried that he likes doing poos in his pants.

  1. is this normal?
  2. how can I help? Ive spoken to the teacher, who said she will support by encouraging him to poo, show him how to lock the door etc. But so far this hasnt appeared to have helped.

You need to find out exactly what has happened/is happening regarding toilets at the new nursery. The longer this goes on the more damaging it is so you need to get it sorted asap. He is clearly trying to tell you his fears.

Thankfully you have realised that telling him off is the worst thing to do.

Scared of the toilets - why, what is scary about them? Smell? Noise? Cold?
Doesn't like children watching. Why are children watching him?
Scared to fall down them - are they adult size toilets, slippery, too high? No toilet seat or step?
