Do your DC have Barbie(s)?

DD is 5 and never owned a Barbie. She never seemed interested and I didn’t want to initiate it as I am not a big fan. She has recently seen them in a shop and started asking for them. I noticed that none of her friends seem to own them whereas they used to be such a common toy when I was a child. Was just wondering how common they still are and AIBU to not want to buy them for her (too thin/glam etc)

My five year old son is obsessed with them, plays with them constantly. We have a Barbie car but I refuse to get the dream house (it’s huge!). One of them’s name is apparently’Batman’s true love’ Grin.

Imicola · 24/01/2026 21:14

Yes my DD7 has a few. I hate them and would have preferred not to have any, but she got a couple as gifts from school friends and then wanted more! She also plays with them at after school club.

Leenatewan · 24/01/2026 22:00

Yes, DD7 has about 30 dolls, some Barbie, some Disney. More than half were handed down from older cousins so they've been popular for a few years. We have the house, which is huge but lots of fun. They get played with loads.

My girls are now teens but never had a Barbie and never asked for one. Had a few other dolls and a lot of Lego and cuddly animals.

Dorrieisalittlewitch · 24/01/2026 22:09

My 7 year old has some. She prefers Monster High dolls though. As far as I know all her friends have some combination of monster high/disney and barbie dolls.

skkyelark · 24/01/2026 22:21

We don't have any barbies (or disney dolls, or monster high dolls), although my six year old has played with various combinations at friends' houses and after school club. She's expressed the occasional passing interest in having one, but never asked at birthday/Christmas, nor chosen to spend her pocket money on one. I think the not quite four year old is pretty oblivious to them still.

We do have a couple of our generation dolls, a couple baby dolls, a Sylvanian family, a doll's house family, various lego people (and an entire lego menagerie), and a bunch of peg people (who live in magnetic tiles creations).

No, we had Lottie dolls rather than Barbies.

As a child, I had Sindy dolls rather than Barbies.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 24/01/2026 22:25

Dd (6) has loads. Her favourites are the mermaid Barbie’s, but she has a whole collection, some handed down from her older sisters, but also got some for Christmas and her birthday.

CoodleMoodle · 24/01/2026 22:29

DD used to play with mine (Barbie and Sindy) when we went to DM's. She loved dressing them up but didn't do much imaginary play with them. She then asked for some to have here and I bought her a few and a bundle of clothes from eBay. She's 11 now and still gets them out every now and then, but they were never her absolute favourite. She did love organising the clothes in the wardrobe, though!

DS has had access to them but never really interested in playing with them.

NotSoSure1234 · 24/01/2026 22:30

My 5yr old does she loves them x

Boogiemam · 24/01/2026 22:37

4 year old has 2. Both from the charity shop. One is a mermaid which never gets touched, and the other looks like a crack head with cut off hair. She only comes out with the monster truck to get run over.... I dunno what that says about her but she enjoys the game 😂

Elizabeta · 24/01/2026 22:42

Yes, DD6 has a few. I hate them but they’ve snuck in as presents. To be fair, she gets a lot of play value from them. The poor things spend hours doing gymnastics tournaments.

thankfulnessisnotbizarre · 24/01/2026 22:44

we had few, varied races

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 24/01/2026 22:48

My almost 5 yr old has a couple. They seem to live in the bathroom as so likes to play with them in the bath. She likes them but they are not her favourite.

Platypus7 · 24/01/2026 22:53

I never bought them but my DDs inherited a load from their cousins and they mainly lived naked in a jug in the bath. They were just dolls, and not their main toy tbh, just something else to play with. They were more fixated with LaLa Loopsy etc (is that still a thing?) I do think if you ban something it makes them want it more.

CarCarTruckJeep · 24/01/2026 23:09

My 7yo got given maybe 4 or so as gifts over the last couple of years but I helped her do a clear out of her bedroom recently and she chose to chuck them all. She almost never played with any of them so wasn't a surprise.

mangomama91 · 24/01/2026 23:09

My 9 year old plays with Barbies and has done for years as did her older sister. I think 5 is a good age for her to start getting into these dolls if she's interested in them.

user2848502016 · 24/01/2026 23:11

Yes my DDs had them. Eldest DD was obsessed with Disney princess so she had a lot of those dolls too.
Lottie dolls are a bit less glam/more wholesome if you’re worried about that

My husband said 'what the fuck!' When he saw the dream house I bought off FB for Christmas. Our house is small but with some furniture move around, it fit in perfectly.

We could genuinely get rid of all of her other toys and I doubt she would be bothered. It us played with daily 😊

Appleandcidergravy · 24/01/2026 23:13

Yes we have quite a few
She loves them and has the Barbie camper van and Barbie dream boat- keeps her quiet...
She goes through stages of playing with our generation/baby Annabelle dolls, and then goes back to barbies.....
She has a play kitchen- makes them food, makes magnatile buses to take them on a journey, uses them with Lego etc......

Runkle · 24/01/2026 23:39

Yep DD4 loves them and has done for about a year now. The storylines she comes up with are so random (Ken died once, cause of death: talking too much) and she mirrors things that have happened at nursery etc. Even on xmas day with new toys she wanted to play Barbies. We get a lot from charity shops but she also has new as gifts.
